The Bucs are basically saying they tanked 2011 free agent wise after a 10-6 finish in 2010 so they could.....sign free agents this year?

Reminder that sources within the Bucs organization (and nowhere else) reported that the team actually outbid the redskins for albert haynesworth but he took less money to play for a proven winner.

they actually didn't fall apart quickly if you take the entirety of like 2004-now as their collapse. look at their free agent activity and their first round drafting in that time period. 2 of 3 years under morris were hideous.

having four borderline hall of famers on defense and getting them in 2 consecutive drafts can really soften a landing.

Actually the exact opposite, since they bought them using the team as collateral, sold off their best player for 70 million pounds (to finish only 50 million in the black), and are trying to blackmail richer Man U supporters into buying them (and the debt) at a profit for the owners.

As far as spending on the team? Top of the list.

As far as his priorities? Last season indicates either a Machiavellian sense of strategy or an allegiance to the league and other owners over everything else.

allow me to answer your question with an amazing effort post from another forum about the Skins, who are in a similar situation.

God, fug ESPN. So yes, this is true, and matches up to my numbers (13.7 million in 2011 cap space plus 34 million in 2012 cap space)

As they only have about $4 million in dead money, it would be tremendously irresponsible to go more than about $8 million over the cap (i.e. use more than half of their 2011 cap carryover). Please see my post on the Dolphins about this.

If the Skins spent it all, not only would the team come into the following season $20+ million over the cap, but they'd have to start cutting guys, which would create dead money that'd be on the books for the next two years. And over those years, they'd have the salary floor to deal with, forcing them to hand out new signing bonuses to meet the cash floor. Which would, in turn, lead to even more dead money if they had to cut those players.

Basically, teams can only afford to spend as much of their credit as they have dead money on the books in 2012, since most/all of that money will disappear in 2013.

But also yeah, the Redskins already had $34 million, which is fuging plenty to spend on whatever they want.

Edit: Also, a team can still only have 53 guys, and you're limited to who's available in free agency this year. I guess you could sign every upgrade free agent, trade every draft pick, and overspend to leverage your next 5-6 years for one "ringer" year, but winning a Super Bowl takes as much luck as it does skill. Look at how bad the Eagles "Dream Team" backlash was--could you imagine if this hypothetical superteam lost in the playoffs or worse, missed them?
