I really need to make an effort post about the bucs

After rolling over $23.5 million in salary cap space from 2011, Bucs GM Mark Dominik expects to be one of the league's most active teams in free agency this offseason.

"We purposely rolled every penny we could into this year's cap," explained Dominik. "Clubs didn't have to do that, but we wanted to. We have plans." Tampa has been mentioned by various sources as a potential landing spot for free agents Vincent Jackson, Mario Williams, Brent Grimes, Curtis Lofton, and Mike Tolbert. According to figures compiled by ESPN, the Bucs' $60.5 million in salary cap space is second only to the Chiefs' $62.9 million.

They said this last year and the result was Punter/Kick off specialist Michael Koenen becoming their highest paid player.

The Bucs are basically saying they tanked 2011 free agent wise after a 10-6 finish in 2010 so they could.....sign free agents this year?

Reminder that sources within the Bucs organization (and nowhere else) reported that the team actually outbid the redskins for albert haynesworth but he took less money to play for a proven winner.

Basically what I'm saying is the Bucs are lying.

they actually didn't fall apart quickly if you take the entirety of like 2004-now as their collapse. look at their free agent activity and their first round drafting in that time period. 2 of 3 years under morris were hideous.

having four borderline hall of famers on defense and getting them in 2 consecutive drafts can really soften a landing.

Glazer's still own them? If so they are so up into making Man U win it's not funny.

Actually the exact opposite, since they bought them using the team as collateral, sold off their best player for 70 million pounds (to finish only 50 million in the black), and are trying to blackmail richer Man U supporters into buying them (and the debt) at a profit for the owners.

They're terrible owners.

How do you rate JR, then? Just curious.

As far as spending on the team? Top of the list.

As far as his priorities? Last season indicates either a Machiavellian sense of strategy or an allegiance to the league and other owners over everything else.

Depends on what you think.

So let me get this "rollover" cap space thing clarified....if a team was under the cap by any amount for 2011, they can "rollover" that amount and add it to the cap limit this year? So the Bucs have 60.5 million, 23.5 million of which comes from undershooting the cap in 2011? Meaning they are projected to be actually only 36.5 million under the 2012 cap?

Maybe they will be the "dream team" of 2012 like Philly was last year, ha ha.

allow me to answer your question with an amazing effort post from another forum about the Skins, who are in a similar situation.

God, fug ESPN. So yes, this is true, and matches up to my numbers (13.7 million in 2011 cap space plus 34 million in 2012 cap space)

As they only have about $4 million in dead money, it would be tremendously irresponsible to go more than about $8 million over the cap (i.e. use more than half of their 2011 cap carryover). Please see my post on the Dolphins about this.

If the Skins spent it all, not only would the team come into the following season $20+ million over the cap, but they'd have to start cutting guys, which would create dead money that'd be on the books for the next two years. And over those years, they'd have the salary floor to deal with, forcing them to hand out new signing bonuses to meet the cash floor. Which would, in turn, lead to even more dead money if they had to cut those players.

Basically, teams can only afford to spend as much of their credit as they have dead money on the books in 2012, since most/all of that money will disappear in 2013.

But also yeah, the Redskins already had $34 million, which is fuging plenty to spend on whatever they want.

Edit: Also, a team can still only have 53 guys, and you're limited to who's available in free agency this year. I guess you could sign every upgrade free agent, trade every draft pick, and overspend to leverage your next 5-6 years for one "ringer" year, but winning a Super Bowl takes as much luck as it does skill. Look at how bad the Eagles "Dream Team" backlash was--could you imagine if this hypothetical superteam lost in the playoffs or worse, missed them?

    • I think it will be a transition year will be a playoff team (more grindy and young blood) but not a top contender... but in 25-26 back to being a contender IMO Nickishin will be ready to do day 1 IMO.... and if we can get some of these young guys the experience/development FUS/Blake/Nadeu/Morrow
    • in itself i didn't/don't have an issue with this. And our main point has always been that we didn't want to be one of the go for it all teams at the deadline because we have a window that has term with Slavin/Aho/Svech/Jarvy.  however. keeping martinook above market value and not combining the youth influx with things like changing things at goalie and or signing a big name as a guentz replacement just feels like so far we're kind of sitting this out, and i really dont like the idea of taking a large step backwards from pre deadline roster last year. i understand we've given this a run with the same guys and it hasn't worked and changing some things there. but we also know exactly what our glaring issues are. so to not get better at those while also getting worse/losing big time names in other areas is pretty disheartening thus far. Hope there's more to come.
    • It looks like next year is going to be the year that a lot of young guys get a chance.
