Any reason those guys would agree to smaller pay checks?

In many cases it's not a smaller paycheck, it's the same amount of money paid on a different schedule.

In other cases, players will agree to take a smaller paycheck to ensure the team can retain other FA's and continue to build. Your ass belongs to them for the next few years anyways, might as well do what you can to help the team be competitive.

If you read the post I laid it out clearly for you. When a player signs a contract they get a portion "guranteed". Heres an example I you were a player and signed a 5 year 50 million contract and got 5 million of it "guranteed". The team would likely spread your guranteed money out over the course of the contract, In this case that would average out to 1 million per year. The rest would be considered "base salary" divided over the 5 years. so lets say you got 1 million guranteed every year and 9 million in base salary every year. If the team cuts you after year 1, they owe you 4 million no matter what.(the amount of guranteed money they agreed to). The rest they are off the hook for because its not guranteed.

The "guranteed" money is better known as the "signing bonus".

edit: In Thomas Davis' contract he was also given an "option bonus" 8.25 million to be exact. This money would be due in march and we would be more likely to pay it if he was healthy and playing like an all pro last year. Since he was not healthy, theres no reason for us to pay the "option bonus" which would be due all at once against the cap when we could just cut him and only pay him his remaining signing bonus aka "guranteed money" 5.6 million. If we picked up the option we would owe him the option, plus the remainder of his guranteed money and the base salary for every year we keep him.

I read the post, and I appreciate the info. I was just trying to say that I thought his signing bonus from the contract last year gave him all his guaranteed money that year and didn't cost us anything down the road if he couldn't go. That's why I thought it was mutually beneficial to both he and the organization, because he would be paid well if he could play, and if he couldn't, it cost the team nothing after the 2011 season. That's where I guess I was wrong. Again, thanks for the info though.

Your welcome:cheers2: and rep for you for manning up and admiting a mistake. I know several posters who would never do that because contrary to popular belief the purpose of rep is to recognize who post legit info and links not who is the coolest, has the biggest e-dick,biggest e-tits(for you nice ladies on here)etc.

If rep was used correctly njpanthers would have none. Nor would the guy who swore that we re-signed Shockey.

I'm no salary cap genius nor am I Marty hurney. But the contracts that he gives out that looks bad. But they really aren't. They back load the ones like Godfrey's he isn't set to make that much from it until 2 years from now. And guess what happenes when he does underplay that big contract... They restructure and he never sees that big money. Or the alternative is that he turns into a star and we get him at a cheaper price and keep him on his original contract. I'm not big on hurneys drafting but I trust him when it comes down to business and salary.

If rep was legit I would have none either. I don't post anything legit, well, ever.

Edit: There was this one time right after we drafted him that I posted an article about how Jimmy Clausen could throw a really tight spiral.

So I guess I've got that little gem to build on. :(

rotoworld says this

http://rotoworld.com/teams/contracts/nfl/car/

so TD cap hit is probabaly close to 11 million because he is due a 8 million dollar bonus in March.

I thought the option bonus was treated as guaranteed money when paid....spread over the remaining life of his contract for Cap Purposes.

But, I very well may be wrong....happens all the time.

Great post. I think all of these guys would restructure because it's a win-win. Nobody on that list (maybe Gross) would be in high demand(big contract) elsewhere. Like you said, we probably wouldn't cut them- this year, but next year or the next? This way they stretch their earning power and can stay where they are comfortable.

Players are usually very happy to restructure because it converts money they might earn in the future as salary and changes it to a signing bonus which is paid immediately so it can be spread out over the life of the remaning contract. Obviously extending them also gives them up front signing bonus money if it is substantial but the salary money is not guaranteed.

One practical issue is that restructuring a player means that you have to pay them a chunk of money up front and have created an increased cap hit down the road. If the player doesn't stick with the team, you have created a signifiicant dead cap hit or money you guaranteed and have to pay for a guy who is no longer on the team. WE did that with Jake to the tune of 10 million.

TD will be cut, not restructured or extended. Why? Because we are not going to honor the option bonus nor are we going to pay him the salary we outlined in his initial contract. We will either release him and if no one picks him up, sign him to a completely different contract or he can voluntary void his contract and we can redo it. But that is not the same as restructuring in the sense of what we will do with everyone else. Because we release him his guaranteed signing bonus money escalates which I have heard was the 5.9 million. I did not hear that we could cut him with no cap hit as Yas suggests. I hope he is right.

As for Hangartner he is a free agent this year so if we don't sign him it costs us nothing and he doesn't figure into the cap right now. Rotoworld is a better and more accurate site. Look at Hangartner on spotrac, he is listed as being signed through 2013 and his position is cornerback. LOL. Problem with some sites is that garbage in- garbage out.

In Gross' case did we restructure him already which is why he counts 11.5 million against the cap? It should have been around 9.5 based on his contract which he signed in 2009.

agreed with P55 that rotoworld is more reliable and has better information. definitely a lot more detailed.

i wouldn't get caught up in those numbers, though. what the media gets as far as contract details is very vague and the actual numbers and details get manipulated a lot and will be.

i doubt even the player's agents know how much room teams actually have. anything that we get is best guesses and guesstimations from "league sources".

no harm in speculating, though.
