Car.Accident Question

That's incorrect, partially.

They will assess the damage and send you a check, but you'd be wise to submit your own estimates. The check my brother got two months ago would have only covered half the work.

So he got an estimate and they paid, without any hassle.

all companies are different.....most will do there own estimate if you aren't using an approved shop and pay what there estimate states (they then will pay the supplements and negotitiate/approve those supplements w/ the repair shop).

Unless they are swamped or it is tiny......they usually won't take random estimates on vehicles.

Most reputable shops have been approved by most large carriers. He said he had State Farm which is one of the most highly respected companies in the industry.

To just mail you a check violates the very principle of indemnification, which is the purpose of insurance. It's also covered extensively on the State licensing exam given by the DOI.

Adjusters aren't as common as they were due to the progess of technology. My brother, who hit a deer recently, never saw an adjuster but did receive a check. He then went to get an estimate on the repairs and it was well above the check amount. The body shop sent the company the estimate, did a conversion, got everyone's approval and they paid the body shop directly for the repairs, without any hassle.

When I worked at Allstate I didn't work in claims, but I do know a little as a former licensed Property and Casualty agent.
