Building my first gaming rig

You're always good for a chuckle and you are not disappointing me this time.

But for accuracy sake...

Since I posted my purchase and you informed me that I had paid too much Ive posted once. Conceding that you were likely right but I was happy none the less. Then on the edit I proved you right but maintained that I was still content with my purchase.

You, on the other hand have made four subsequent posts directly related to the cost of my rig. Your "breakdown" has continued to present options that are inferior in one way or another and never quite made the specs of the rig I purchased.

And now that Ive made a polite and even light hearted post suggesting that no one needs to worry about the cost of my rig you break out the hyperbole machine. So if there is a "tizzy" Id say it was yours.

But lest we devolve even more into the depths of the gay-ass world of a message board pissing contest I yield the floor to you to make a parting shot and I concede the battle to you.

the only thing inferior is the ram. we're talking an 8 core 3.6ghz vs a 3.3ghz quad core for the same price point. the ram speed won't even make a fart's difference.

now had you built the same pc yourself with the same components, yeah, you would have only saved 100$ at the most through newegg. but buying a prebuilt of the same specifications and upgrading the components you really wanted/needed could have gotten you more machine for the same price

i don't know what's so awful about that

It's been a while since his last update but it's still a pretty good reference.

that's not too bad if you're building for the contemporary market, but if you're looking a few years down the road those quad cores aren't going to hold up

but i don't see the need for ssd until they become more affordable either.

math is your friend!

original system cost 1800$

tower (1400) + monitors (400) + ssd (120) = 1920$!

its magic!

the main drawback to this is you will want to purchase an 800w power supply, something quality like corsair and swap them out asap within the first 90 days

its only the responsible thing to do

So now you recommend buying the computer but immediately swapping out the supplied PSU for a $129 quality Corasir PSU? Really?

What brand is the mother board and the ram on the Cyberpower unit? On par with the quality of the PSU? Iminicus hand picked a quality Intel mobo, CPU and PSU. It's apples and oranges, personal choice and there is nothing wrong with the path he chose.

Of course there is something wrong with it, it's not the choice PSC says he should choose. :p

the mobo is asus. but yeah, its like someone spending $10,000 to trick out a CRX

their business if they want to, but don't get mad if i make fun of your glorified lawn mower

Side note: I need a new video card, hd 6850 or gtx 550 ti? looking around $120-150, cheaper the better. lower power consumption the better(i have a 610W psu and don't wanna have to buy a new one). I'm sitting here playing ME3 multiplayer at 1024x768 windowed mode and everything off with my shitty temp gfx card. It looks so much prettier for other people :(

Xbox is nice and all, but consoles used to update like every 3-4 years. it's been 7 years since the 360 came out and anything new will be set at a ridiculous price. Plus PC games and PC ports of games are usually cheaper :(. Decent video cards cost like 300 bucks. 300 bucks every 3 years is the same as buying a console every 3 years, without having to settle for "optimized for low end hardware" console version.

Just be aware the "TI" version of Nvidia cards are generally cut down in performance in comparison to regular GTX cards.

For instance I run a GTX 470 in my box and it literally bitch slaps a GTX 550Ti. I think you'll find the HD 6850 does as well.

Here's a good review with a ton of cards in comparison:

6850 all the way. 6870 if you can spring an extra 20 bucks.

the 550 ti has a faster core clock

The 550ti is a terrible card. 6850 blows it out of the water.

Not true. The 560 ti is better than a 560. It just happens to be that the 550 ti is horrible in gaming performance.

i wouldn't call it horrible, but you're right, the 6850 is a better card. i just didn't feel like doing much looking into it last night

i'd go with the 6870 too

http://www.hwcompare.com/5999/radeon-hd-6850-vs-radeon-hd-6870/

but its gonna be like 50$ more, not 20

my guess is nobody would notice the difference between the 3
