SCP Panthers Mock 3.0 (with Trade)

Catalyst

Recommended Posts

Assumes only 1 comp. pick. I'm going to do a trade in this one, which I generally don't like to do, but it is a definite possibility that we'll trade down, so I'm going to attempt to project one.

Bengals trade up to our pick to take Trent Richardson; they give up their earliest 1st round pick (17th overall) and their 2nd round pick.

1st (f/CIN): Zach Brown, OLB, UNC

He would be a reach in the top-10, but 17th overall is about right. We just can't count on T.D. ever being healthy again and while I do think he's coming back at a reduced salary, having Brown gives us insurance and a likely long-term stud at weakside 'backer.

2nd: Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

Yes, we used two 3rd rounders on DT's last year, but neither McClain or Fua are true nose tackles and Poe is just that. Long-term I'm thinking Poe as the run-stuffer with McClain as the pass rusher if all goes according to plan. Fua likely remains a depth guy.

2nd (f/CIN): Markelle Martin, FS, Oklahoma State

The Sherrod Martin experiment has failed. Robert Lester is another option here, but Martin is better, IMO.

4th: Mitchell Schwartz, OT, California

Truth be told, I like Byron Bell at RT long-term, but Schwartz is shooting up draft boards and we already have his brother who is a solid OL. It's possible he doesn't last this long, but if he does we should take him.

5th: Chris Rainey, RB/KR, Florida

Rivera has said he wants a scat back. We also badly need an upgrade at both kick and punt returner and Rainey can fill all 3 roles, IMO.

6th: Shaun Powell, P, Florida State

Powell is, IMO, the best punter in the draft. Would actually not mind taking him in the 5th if need be.

7th: Dominique Davis, QB, East Carolina

A backup option for Cam with a similar (if not nearly as impressive) skillset.

7th: T.J. Graham, WR, N.C. State

A late round flyer on a guy who could develop into a solid player. If not, it's only a 7th rounder.

I like it, but I don't think Poe will last to our 2nd round pick. The Steelers need a new NT, the Texans do too. If no one in the 1st, the Colts are switching to a 3-4 and would be retarded not to take Poe with their #34. I think Cox would be more likely at that pick, and I wouldn't be upset about that pick if we couldn't get Poe.

Zero chance that Poe is there in the 2nd.

Otherwise, I like the picks....except for Dominique Davis. I watched a lot of ECU games and Davis sucks. he is WAY to inconsistent in the passing game.

I've seen many mocks with Poe in the 2nd - recent mocks. But in any event, you can replace him with the best DT available in the 2nd if it makes more sense.

deep class of decent CBs and we wind up with none. not crazy about that.

i'm another one who doesn't think that poe will be there in the 2nd. there is an option or two who will/should be there that would be solid, though.

i like zach brown a lot, though. i've got mixed feelings about this draft.
