Panthers' Cap Room + New Rule

Lets cut the whole team.

We need the cap space!

"I don't want to pay $1 million to see clausen throw picks in preseason"

Good thing it isn't your money then.

Cutting him means we'd have to draft another qb...1 less pick to add talent to the team. No thanks.

Thank god the coaches and gm make these decisions.

we wouldn't have to draft another QB.

clausen has nothing of value. how can he contribute outside of the classroom? how has he contributed?

meh...let's keep him and his $1mil bonus due him because we don't want to add a cheaper alternative that might actually be able to play in this offense if needed.

don't want to add a cheaper alternative? Never said i didn't want that.

I just don't see the panthers cutting clausen before his roster bonus. Maybe i'll be wrong...maybe i'll be right.

Which way would you bet?

1.) Clausen will make 1.41 million next year if we keep him (the 923,000 is just a bonus if he's on the roster another year.

2.) We need 3 qb's, you are correct and our cap space is tight. I, for one, would like to have Derek Anderson back, but he's a FA. Anderson (our #2 QB) was paid 1.3 million in 2011. So, for the sake of argument, he'll cost the same amount this year.

3.) Clausen + Anderson = 2.7 million.

Clausen + draft pick, FA, or UDFA

Anderson + draft pick, FA, or UDFA

I still say cut Clausen to make sure we have enough money to sign Anderson. Neither one has a skill set comparable to Cam's, but with Anderson we have a better mentor that can help a young/new QB....and he's freaking #2 on the depth chart. We can pick up Dennis Dixon for 1.2 million (2.5 million is better than 2.7) another FA, Russell Wilson late in the draft, or a UDFA...afterall were talking about the 3rd string QB...if Cam and Anderson both go down we're fugged anyways.

With the new gameday rule, why do you even want three QBs on the team? Derek Anderson is infinitely more valuable to our team than Clausen is, and that spot that Clausen is using could be used for another DT, an OLB, or a good special teams player.

I like Clausen. I feel bad for him for what he had to go through. But, he's never going to play in Carolina, ever again. Why not let him go somewhere where he has a chance to contend, while we free up the cap + roster space?

makes a whole lot more sense to cut him lose. he doesn't fit the offense. he doesn't have the mobility or the arm to carry out this offense. more than likely he will be nothing more than a 3rd option.

i can't for the life of me think of a good reason why a team with a up to the limit cap situation would want to keep around a 3rd string QB who didn't even get a jersey last year that will be getting a $1mil+ bonus....esp. when he doesn't fit the scheme and he'd have to have a very different playbook than the usual.

i can't for the life of me think of why clausen would want to stick around in that situation where he has no hope whatsoever of competing for a starting gig and would be lucky to get even the #2 spot....esp. when that team's fanbase (right or wrong) boo's him every time he gets his hand on the ball, even in training camp.

there is nothing that makes sense about that.

Cutting Clausen won't do crap for getting cap room since his cap hit is literally about as low as anyone on the team. But he should go for football reason.

What will give some relief is dealing with the Thomas Davis situation.

It really hurts that they gave Williams so much.

it will when he's getting a $1mil bonus in march.
