Jeremy Shockey is a high-priority free agent for the Panthers

You forgot the big catches Olsen made this season?

Yeah I could just end it there, but I'll keep going. This offense is geared to have two capable tight ends ready to play (no, not necessarily for using them both on the same play all the time). What happens if Olsen needs to come out for a play? You really want to rely on Gary "I have two catches and I threw a block once in my career" Barnidge?

Cam obviously puts a lot of trust in Shockey and is comfortable looking for him when Smith isn't open. Do you really want to take away an option that Cam relies upon when things go sour or when he needs help in the redzone? Do you not know the value of a quality, reliable tight end when you have a young, inexperienced quarterback? Just look what Witten has done for that fraud Tony Romo...and people still think he's a starter-caliber quarterback....and think that it's all Jerry Jones' fault anyways (it's not).

This forum really needs to start appreciating tight ends (he he) because they are legit weapon(easy way to create mismatches, confuses the defense over whether or not they're gonna block or run a route, can play multiple positions, typically stronger/taller than WRs). The position is necessary for maintaining a stable, effective offense, and I would rather start the season with two proven tight ends, than one proven one and one "budget-friendly" tight end posing as a legitimate first-backup.

This isn't madden guys. You can't just keep one tight end with good stats and use him all season.

Should read the article a little closer.

That is the author's opinion of who is high, medium, and low.

It also says that Shockey is likely to want a deal of at least $4M per season.....and that it is unlikely that we will go that high given how Barnidge was having a great camp before his injury.

Would love to see him back, but we have bigger needs to spend any material cap space on.

"great camp" makes our experienced veteran not worth it?

lol, spoken like a true madden franchise warrior

Romo had 31 TDs this season. Witten had 5. In 09 Romo had 26 and Witten had 2. Both years he had 3000+ yards not to Witten. Your logic to suggest Romo sucks and Witten is the only reason he looks good is flawed

Are you dense? Look at the reception numbers...

Odd thing to me was the link is to the Raleigh News and Observer reprinting an article by Joe Person.

But yeah, it's all his opinion.

Witten had 79, Bryant had 63, Robinson had 54, and Austin had 43. Your logic is still flawed because that still doesn't show Witten is the reason Romo looks good.

Nice try with the Madden comment. Sorry to disappoint you, but I am the Anti Madden. Hate the game....too many people try and relate it to actual football.

Apparently reading comprehension and logical thought is not your strong suit. Therefore, I will dumb this down to where EVEN YOU can understand it.

I did not say that I would not want Shockey back...or that he did not make our receiving corp better. I only stated that if the price gets as high as Shockey may be expecting (based on a few reports that are out there), I could see the Panthers letting him walk. They have Olsen and Barnidge.... both are solid TE's.

Given the cap position we are in and the other needs that this team has, I am not sure the FO will invest that much into the TE position. I am not saying that they will or they won't. Just that I would not be surprised to see him walk.

How doesn't it show that?

Tony Romo makes Witten open?

If Witten was the only reason Romo looked good then he wouldn't have other receivers with good numbers. Witten having the most receptions only shows that he gets the ball the most. That happens on every team you know.

Man the tone in this thread is a little hostile. . Im a pacifist personally  . . but I have to say that we dont really know where we are in the cap right? I mean there are a crapload variables, a crapload of off season time, and we have a cap specialist for a gm. All that? and maybe the argument weighs differently.

We are in the second phase of a restructure which I would assume still means lots of unloading of players that dont fit the system and bringing in those who do. I dont know what the odds are. . I'll say 75% they keep the Shock just for bullchittin around, but thats based on the bias that I think Shockey has brought a matching style to our brand.

brawl n hawl beat that ayce into the ground! WHOS NEXT?!

I love the attitude that Shockey brings. I love this team, I really do, but barring a couple of players, our team has too many players with no heart (Peppers' syndrome). I know that may sound cruel, but it's not permanent or nothing. We need more players like Shockey to change the "tone" of this team. I know that it should be a coach's job to motivate the players, but there's nothing like having some heart/fire/whatever on the field and sidelines to inspire other players. I'm tired of some of our players "just running the play". I don't want them to just go out there and prove that they did their homework (learning the playbook). I want our players to want to hurt, humiliate, and sh*t on the other team every Sunday. With more players like Shockey maybe that can change sooner rather than later.

*in before Shockey doesn't get re-signed and I bawwww*
