Steve Smith got mentioned.

Steve Smith, WR, Carolina Panthers (2001) — The real question is how many yards will a receiver need to gain entrance 10 years from now? Smith won't have enough touchdowns or receptions, that's for certain

I've been thinking about this for a few seasons now. After speaking of his lack of touchdowns in this article it came to my mind again. There's no way to track this, but I have to think Smitty leads the league during his time playing in catching deep jump balls and going down at the 1. Think about it. It happens all the time it seems. Green Bay in 08 I swear it happened 2-3 times. This season against Minnesota, Washington, and Chicago. Granted I know this goes on with all receivers but seemingly so much to Steve. There's really no point to this, just rambling.

Shockey was also in their somewhere, don't see him making it.

If everything stays the same Kalil's probably the best bet of those mentioned. Beason's in with a shout but I think we're not mainstream enough for his leadership to be played up like it is with Ray Lewis.

A couple of SB's would increase everybody's chances at the hall exponentially.

I think Smitty has an outside shot because the voters will consider his accomplishments in light of his size.

Voters already have a hard enough time with WRs who clearly have the resume.......and it will just get even harder for WRs as so many in this era will put up what were once considered great numbers.

Late start, 04, 07, 09, 10 killed his chances. Not enough time to build a resume. Not a talent issue......but they don't put guys in bc of talent

Smith might be 2nd in career rec yards when his career is over.

If he played 4 more years with 1000 each year he wouldn't even be top 5 in yardage. Not including guys like Fitgerald and Andre who will leapfrog Smith in that window.

For the "but Chris Carter isn't in, so no other WR can get in!" argument, apparently there's a bias against Carter because he's a douche. And has super thick eyebrows.

With that said, I think it'd take a bit of a miracle for Smitty to get in the HoF during his lifetime. He's been great, but injuries and bad QBs have limited his production and really that's all HoF voters look for. SB's and stats.

Normally, one of the things that helps someone get in is an advocate, a guy amongst the media voters who makes the case for why he should be in there.

Who's gonna do that for Smith?

(you know what his relationship with a lot of the media is like)

Keeping Carter out also is split voting at WR. By the time Smitty comes up there will be tons of WRs with better numbers and they will all split votes and make it near impossible for those in that group to get in.......will need rings to set yourself apart.

Peppers has the best shot thus far of any drafted Panther.....at least in terms of the resume they have actually put together
