Pat White in the second round for Panthers?

WVU homer that I am, this is pretty deflating :(

I have to put a fair amount of the blame on Rich Rodriguez. It was he who failed to put in the time to develop White as a passer, choosing instead to make him the kind of one-read-and-run QB that rarely succeeds beyond the college level. White proved that he could have developed as a passer in the one year he spent under Bill Stewart, but it apparently just wasn't enough.

Still, even the hated Rich Rod didn't make him NFL-short. It isn't just the height issue, though. White has to bear his share of the blame for the current disinterest because he chose to follow the Eric Crouch "let me play QB or I'll take my ball and go home" strategy. More than one guy (Seneca Wallace, for example) has bought time to learn the QB position by playing at another spot. Heck, even if you don't set the world on fire as a QB, you still have an NFL career, and that something 90+ percent of the population can't say. White would have been smarter to follow that example rather than Crouch's.

White isn't the first guy to make this mistake, of course, but what's sadder still is that he probably won't be the last.

What shocks me about that, though, is that White never gave any indication of being anything other than a team player when he was at WVU. He was praised for solid character over and over again, and deservedly so. With that as a background, it's pretty surprising to see him sitting where he is now. Surprising...and disappointing :(

My hope: Either he accepts a position switch or someone takes an interest in making him a number three and giving him time to develop. Sadly, the evidence right now makes it appear neither of those things will happen.
