Brees growing 'frustrated' over contract

Here is the big problem New Orleans faces (This may have been mentioned--did not read all 10 pages of comments): If they tag Brees, it will cost them well over $16 million , depending on the designation. Then Nicks and Colston hit the open market. If they sign him to a deal, they probably tag Nicks.

Signing Brees and tagging Nicks, the best case scenario for New Orleans, could take up $25 million of cap space for 2 players.

Great drama, and most scenarios end poorly for the Saints.

Off topic. You can change the amount of posts per page. For me, this is only page 3. Easier to read whole conversation when you don't have to click through that many pages.

So at a time when Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick averages $16.6 million per season, and Tom Brady and Peyton Manning receive $18 million per season, Brees could receive a franchise tag for just $14.5 million. The NFLPA and NFL Management Council still are going back and forth over the salary numbers used for some of these calculations, sources said, but the QB tag will be between $14.4 million to $14.5 million.

i think they are truly a team of destiny...it's just that they are destined to wear bags on their heads.

they've had their 4 years out of 40 of being relevant. now it's time the natural order of things were restored.

their future is in the bag...

I mean if you're Brees and the Redskins are sitting out there with no QB and 40 million in cap space, you're telling me you wouldn't test the market?

He's won a SB, set records, etc... it's time to get paid and nobody pays like Danny Snyder.

I thought I read somewhere that the Saints would put the exclusive rights franchise tag on Brees, which would prevent Brees from even approaching other teams about a contract.

Edit: According to this section of an article on PFT that is what it means. The same article also points out that the exclusive tag could be much more than the $16.4 million that's been floated around.

But there’s good news, at least for the players who receive the “exclusive” version of the franchise tag, which prevents the player from talking to other teams and/or entertaining an offer sheet that, if not matched, would yield two first-round picks as compensation. For the “exclusive” franchise player, the franchise tender continues to be determined by an average of the five highest player salaries at the same position as of the expiration of the restricted free agency signing period in April.

This means that, for a guy like Saints quarterback Drew Brees, the “exclusive” tender could be much higher than $16.4 million. It will eventually depend on, for example, whether Matt Flynn signs a front-loaded contract with a big cap number in 2012, whether Peyton Manning stays in Indy under his current deal (unlikely), and whether Manning signs with a new team for big money by the middle of April.

I think I also read something on PFT that Brees wouldn't be happy with a tag based on his experience in SD when he got hurt while playing under a 1 year tender.

Way to alienate your franchise QB by being too cheap to offer him the contract he deserves... wouldn't expect anything else from the Saints.

Couldn't happen to a better team!

I think the hold up is that drew only wants a raspberry tootsie roll pop since he already has enough money and is selfless but the saints FO only has resources to find the grape flavor. Once they find the raspberry they can then go resign all their FAs plus Mario Williams.

What a fool...everybody knows orange is the best.
