Is Steve Smith a Hall of Famer right now?

It also depends on what kind of legacy Smith leaves once he leaves the game. If he delivers a couple more 1000 yd seasons and gets to another superbowl then he will go down as one of the most underrated WR's of all time.

Going down the road people will see his highlight reels and say, "Wow, I've never seen another WR be able to do that."

That will do a lot to help his bid imo.

he has stated he wants to play for another five years.

if he plays another five years and is even decently productive during the last couple of them, and he gets a ring, i think he's as good a candidate as anyone.

If he plays another 5 years.....he will be a roleplayer. Smitty mentioned Donald Driver as the type player he hopes he can become.......and those type years/numbers ain't going to help.

Smitty doesn't have the numbers. Ring or no ring.

Character issues for the HoF are not a major issue if the person rehabilitates themselves near the end of their career. There are plenty of guys in the HoF who don't have crystal clean careers but what they do after retiring is taken into account as well.

It really depends on who the player is frankly. It is basically one media guy from each franchise location and one at large guy for a total of 33 that are the selection committee. To get nominated you need 80% of votes or 26 votes. So 8 no votes scuttles your chances. Character issues are not the deciding factors but if you have 10 guys with similar numbers then they do factor in. With the already logjam of receivers out there, I think it will negatively impact Smith unless he plays for 4 more years at a high level and makes his case more irresistable.

yeah, we'll just stick our hands into the wide receiver jar and get a greg jennings/jordy nelson

Smith will be our main receiver for years to come regardless of his pessimistic modesty.

If Smitty continues to play the next four or five like he stated he wants to, he will finish up there with the best statistically. He does need a ring, and is going to have a shot at getting some in that time frame.

Where Steve does have the edge over Cris Carter and some of the other nominee's is this:

A. His triple crown. It's a signature moment to his career that will force the voters to think back to how the Carolina offense was at that time- a run oriented team with a QB who, while he was pretty good at that time, won't be remembered as good QB, sadly, by anyone other than Panther fans. So Jake had one last gift to give Steve after all those years of rocketing the ball to him, and that was they way he ended his playing days with the Panthers.

B. Steve has signature playoff moments. Something the other guys don't have. His Super Bowl TD catch right before the half and his sliding down the pole in Chicago are some good moments, but most importanly-he has X-Clown. A walkoff TD catch in what has been considered time and time again one f the greatest games in NFL postseason history. That shot of him running into the endzone with his arms spread wide is a classic image that is played when every you see a playoff highlight reel.

He most certainly has a chance.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but in most of the packers games i've watched they've been lining donald driver out wide with jordy nelson or james jones in the slot.

smitty has stated that he wants to play in the slot (something that appears very possible with gettis as a deep threat and lafell rising to a very solid #2 option.

if he plays for another five years, and gets ~1200 yards for three of them, and then ~700 yards for the last two, he finishes 3rd all time receiving. toss a ring on top of that and he's a shoo-in.

I think he will be. Not only for how great of a player he has consistently been throughout his career but also because of all the little things he has done. Being a terrific blocker and teammate. The lack of having a great QB a lot of his years should help him. Plus the fact that he isn't blessed with great size like other receivers. I hope Cam can help him win a SB before he is done. But I think Smith playing for 4-5 more years will easily have HOF stats.
