Preface: Scott Wright has been consistently high on Coples and has him the top-rated senior prospect in the entire draft (although, the first 8 overall are underclassmen). Among other things they go over why Coples underachieved this last season...

Honestly can't think of a player in this draft I'd rather have other than possibly Morris Claiborne. The thing is though that we have some young talent at CB with Butler and Hogan. We are rail thin at DE with basically just Hardy and CJ as impact players. I agree completely with Coples saying he sees himself playing like JPP. We need impact DL and he is going to be one in the league. Putting him on the rotation with Hardy, CJ, Ron Edwards, Fua, and McClain would give us a huge boost to the pass rush and running game. We'll be a completely different defense if we can grab him and get our linebackers healthy. Everyone out there that thinks we need to get rid of Martin and Godfrey will reevaluate.

i'm kind of teetering back and forth when it comes to coples, with all the speculation on his passion for the game, and i understand it's one thing for him to say it, but a completely different story to actually show it.

...but then i heard about JPP's back story and how he didn't really care for football going back a few years before his college career.

I wouldn't be upset if we got Coples, I think the slamming his motor and effort is a bit overblown (admittedly based on only watching a few UNC games). I think this stigma is just as attributable to people looking at him as Peppers 2.0 as the people who think he'll automatically come in and produce 12 sacks his rookie year like Peppers. It's easy to just say "oh he's just the Peppers of this decade, laziness and physical attributes both".

I agree its just a stigma..I have faith that Rivera and Co. can get the best out of him. Plus our DTs should play better this year. Drafting Coples gives us the luxury of getting a corner with that second pick.

Quinton Coples: I just think I was just in a different position. People were looking at me when I was in a position I was comfortable in last year, and this year I was moved to a position where I wasn't comfortable. I had to make an adjustment and help my team. I did what I had to do and overall I was just in a different position.

if what i'm reading is right, he was saying he was comfortable at DT, but uncomfortable at DE...yet DE is the one he's trying to play. i don't know...it just doesn't add up to me.

and then there's this,

Scott Wright: How would you describe your game to someone who has never seen you play? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Quinton Coples: I'm versatile. I get to the ball, get to the quarterback. I'm a pass rusher, I can get to the running back, chase the ball carrier down. My weakness is just things I need to work on to better my skills and move forward.

o rly? does he not know what his specific weaknesses are or did he think wright was asking for a definition of what weaknesses are?

that first question is the one that bothered me, though. that second one just sounded like an answer from some kid who wasn't ready for these kinds of questions.

if rivera believes in this guy, i'm all for it. the talent is unquestionably there. i just question where his head is at.

assuming you are talking about the motivation thing, here's my problem...do we want a pick at the 8/9 spot or really anywhere in the first round that you have to say/hope that about?

My only litmus test that i have is can he put consistant pressure on the QB? I did not see it this last year

I see that as a guy who is willing to play where ever the coach asks and needs for him to play.

He played DE this season because that is where the coach needed him to play.

Not a negative in my book.

Sounds like Peppers if you ask me.

Well, but it was a game they were supposed to get blown out in. LSU was the far superior team and he still excelled in a game that was far closer than expected.

He's also in a position where he has to sell himself.

      I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.

      Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.

      They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
