Music has always been rooted in the culture and times that produce it. People tend to like music that speaks to them or reminds them about a particular time or evokes particular memories or emotions.

Then there is timeless music like Classical or Jazz or Blues which can and should be enjoyed by all ages.

Being eclectic or enjoying music of various types is really a function of being open to new things and being able to appreciate different things. People who tend to stick to the same thing or declare that what they listen to is all there is, tend to be narrow and limited in their perspective in everything, not just music. Music is like eating at a buffet. In order to understand what you truly like, you need to sample everything. And even then you need to try it more than once since some of the greatest things in life are acquired tastes that take time to cultivate.

I'm glad I grew up around music, I can listen to almost anything.

I like classic rock/pop, classic R&B and funk, classic country, bluegrass, techno, blues, jazz, big band, classical, inspirational.

I just can't get into most recent acts or music. Today's so-called "rock", rap, hip-hop is unbearable. And what they like to call "country" music today might be worst of all. Bleh.

I don't think you can paint all rap with a negative broad brush. I am not a big fan of free style rappin because I think folks just make things up as they go and frankly they often lacks clarity and cohesive lyrics and themes I am also not a big fan of lyrics which encourage violence, demean women or use excessive profanity, but rap expresses the urban culture and is certainly a legitimate music form. I personally prefer Nelly and Lil Kim's kind of styles to some of the others, but to each their own.

I'm not sure if this is directed to me but I will respond in case it was. I don't have any opposition or anything against other types of music. Growing up the only music I heard (at least I remember anyway) was hip hop/r&b and gospel so I became familar with those. That is what I still listen to today (and I mean a lot of the songs I grew up with not just the type of music).

I am not a big music person, so I don't go out searching for it. There is a lot of music, not just older stuff but also newer stuff including hip hop, that I haven't heard simply due to lack of exposure and me not searching for it. If someone wanted me to listen to a different type of music I would be open to it, but I don't go searching for it on my own.
