Let's talk about Mario Williams

I was watching moneyball the other night and I think the same thing could apply to the Panthers this year. We don't need to pay 20 milion for Mario Williams we need his kind of numbers for less. If we an't find all that in 1 guy, maybe we need 2 guys who can do what he can. For example when we paired Tyler Brayton who good against the run on first and second down with Johnson who was a pretty good pass rusher, together they held down the spot. So if we consider Hardy a pretty good pash rusher, who could we get for first and second down who is good against the run but not as quick?

draft not lean where we pick in the first two

when looking for starters, draft picks over FA ftw!

build it, you cannot buy it. See Dan Snyder.

the Mario Williams thing was just an example of FA and the fact that we cannot afford someone, but have high priced, part time running backs.

By the way, who are all the 4-3 linebackers that can step in and play right away for the upcoming draft?

I think what you call "part-time" running backs is becoming more of a standard than a luxury. Having two of the calibre that we have is definitely an advantage over most but the sum of the parts, to me, is more than the parts themselves. I think we lose more than just a player if we lose either one of those guys. Just me maybe.

I am not sure that there are any 4-3 guys ready to start right away. I really do not think that is a concern right now, not top two rounds anyway. But I do think that plenty of DT's and DE's have been mentioned in the draft forum that could make an immediate impact.

jared crick from wisconsin.

he usually played DT there, but he's much better suited for a 5tech. 6'6 285. probably would be the best DE against the run in this class and not bad as a pass rusher either. super high motor and good nose for the action. coming off a pec tear towards the end of last year so he might be found later. 4th round is kind of pushing it, though. i can see him in the late 2nd or 3rd round as is. were it not for that injury he'd probably be an early 2nd rounder.

Yeah, our part time RBs gave us 1600 yds. rushing. MJ-D got that by himself, but I bet our part timers are a lot less banged up/worn out.

Having 2 guys who can do what 1 guy would otherwise be able to do is poor strategy though, since there are always 11 players on the field at any one time. When you have 1 guy who can do the job of 2 guys, that leaves another player to do his own thing.

I think Mario or someone of his caliber would be a very welcomed addition to this team but I dont think JR and Hurney see it that way. Honestly we payed Johnson so the other side is not going to see much love and that mostly on any team.

I could see Hurney bring in a "Rucker" type of defensive end, on a reasonable salary, if rivera and himself don't feel they have some that will step up.

I definately don't see them writing the contract it would require to get mario here.

That is a fantasy. A damnnice one, but still a fantasy.
