If you guys want an affordable deep threat WR that can start

Meachem gets deep because they have 4 receivers underneath and can't double everyone. He is a 4th receiver there and get covered by linebackers or safeties. As a number 2 as you suggest he would get more double coverage and be in against corners. How well did he get deep against San Francisco. He had a good game against Detroit but again he is inconsistent which is not what we need.

Why would it hurt to bring him in? We are against the cap as it is. We have 2 deep threats in Gettis and Smith who are already signed and we are paying anyway. This isn't Madden, you can't just sign guys to a 3-4 million dollar contract without cutting someone elsewhere. And again I don't think he will be an upgrade at all in our system. if we had unlimited money and could carry a roster of 60 guys then bring him in. But another third or fourth receiver in our system isn't a high priority. We bring in 2 or 3 free agents a year. Would you spend one of your two free agents choices on Meachem or save it for the defensive side? I know I would go defense.

he gets deep because he has 4.3-4.4 speed.you act like the saints run straight spread gun sets 90% of the time.if inconsistent can get you 4 catches for 111 yards and a TD than sign me up. no team will double both WRs and leave the middle open for our TEs to expose them. they would have to choose therefor allowing him to have his 1on1 with a CB. Olsen is to good for a LB to cover, and not have safety help.i do realize this is not madden, and why do people say that?

you refer to him as a 3rd or 4th WR assuming thats what he would be on this team. he did most of his damage when Moore and Colston was banged up.no team just focuses on one side of the ball in the offseason, you have to bring in competition everywhere to be successful. and you still have the draft, just dont be surprised if a WR is brought at some point.

I think both of you make a mistake in assuming that a reeceiver in the NO

system would fair better in a different system. I think the opposite would be true. Bree's is more accurate than Newton and the system is passer friendly. Meachem caught 65% of his passes because Bree's passes are on the money and easy to catch. Remember that Brees completed 71% of his passes so Meachem's 65% actually brought down Bree's numbers.

of course his percentages would've been lower, and I knew you were going to make that point, that's why I posted it. Shockey's percentages were also lower this year than they were last year when he was with the Saints but he was still productive here. You could make the argument that both him and Reggie Bush are better off out of the Saints' system. Shockey was much more productive on the Giants and his stats slipped as soon as he was traded to NO.

Also Meachem has a history of injuries and is considered somewhat of an underacheiver in their system. So again why would we pay money for a guy who is considered an underacheiver in a very receiver friendly system and instantly expect that his production will translate to even more success here? And issues such as his blocking ability are not even being considered which is a huge concern for us given our running game,

this assumes that any receiver on any team would produce more in the Saints offense, or any other offense with an elite passer. There is no statistical evidence that proves this true. The system isn't "receiver friendly" per se. A lot of people thought Chad Ochocinco would put up big numbers in NE's system but that didn't happen. Why? Because just like any other team, NE, NO, and Indianapolis still have primary reads, and if you're not Welker, Gronkowski, or Hernandez, you aren't getting 1,000 yards. Without Peyton Pierre Garcon posted career highs this year. Assuming elite QBs run "receiver friendly" offenses, shouldn't he have struggled catching passes from Curtis Painter. Shouldn't Chad have had 1,000 yards?

Just because you play with an elite QB doesn't mean you are going to get more production than you would anywhere else. All it means is that you can make more of the opportunities given to you. Meachem ranked 21st among all WRs this year on FO, and there have been instances where he's been open and Brees missed him. He was ranked 12th overall in 2009, and he was first in DVOA, catching 70% of the targets, which was on par with Brees' overall percentage of 70. This was also better than Colston's 65% that year. Drew Brees is a very, very good QB, but his passes don't warp through defenders blanketing his receivers. These guys still have to get open.

Also Meachem has a history of injuries and is considered somewhat of an underacheiver in their system.

he has still played every game the past 3 seasons.

And issues such as his blocking ability are not even being considered which is a huge concern for us given our running game,

again, proof? I'm not saying what you are suggesting is not true, but the consensus around nfl fans is that he's a pretty good run blocker.

We bring in 2 or 3 free agents a year. Would you spend one of your two free agents choices on Meachem or save it for the defensive side? I know I would go defense.

I'm with you on keeping defense as a high priority. But we may create enough space to do both. Whoever we draft is probably only going to cost us a 12-13 million dollar contract. Contracts will be restructured/extended.

This isn't Madden, you can't just sign guys to a 3-4 million dollar contract without cutting someone elsewhere

actually madden does have roster limits, and he can take Legedu Naanee's place
