If you guys want an affordable deep threat WR that can start

not if they have zero interest in retaining him

So if NO has no interest in retaining him, whu would we show much interest either. It isn't like NO has so many WR stars they can just cast guys aside. If they don't think he is worth much, there is likely a reason.

Even as a third or fourth receiver he had mediocre stats and doesn't catch more than 40-45 balls a year. Do we need a 3rd or fourth receiver.

Gettis should be fine this year. If he had gotten hurt in November or December then 6-8 months is pushing a rehab. But given it happened in July, he will have a full year to recover. Many guys who rehab heavily for a full year actually come back stronger and in better shape than before. Of course with Davis having so many issues with an ACL I can see why people would be skeptical of Gettis' return. Still for most players, ACLs heal pretty well.

Hope so but I still don't want to put all my eggs in that basket. Plus LA is a free agent, and could be upgraded.

A 3rd WR in that system would be a 2nd in Carolina's easy.

it is possible for a player with worth to not be retained by their own team because they're not in their plans. I guess you could say the Saints had no interest in Shockey long term and they had to release him.

Um i wouldn't call a 3rd or 4th receiver with 40-45 catches per year mediocre. He caught about 65% of the passes he was targeted for last year. That would have lead the Panthers receivers.

also in 2009, the Saint's zenith season, he caught 9 td passes with 722 receiving yards. Good enough to tie the team lead with Colston, and tied for 10th among all receivers in the league that year. He had 6 this year with about the same production as LaFell (who had 3).

I think both of you make a mistake in assuming that a reeceiver in the NO

system would fair better in a different system. I think the opposite would be true. Bree's is more accurate than Newton and the system is passer friendly. Meachem caught 65% of his passes because Bree's passes are on the money and easy to catch. Remember that Brees completed 71% of his passes so Meachem's 65% actually brought down Bree's numbers.

To compare his stats and LaFell's for example straight up assumes that they are in comparable situations and they surely are not. Brees threw 150 more passes than Newton and had more than double the number of TDs passing the ball. So Meachem catching 6 TDs versus LaFell's 3 seems not that big a deal given that was 6 out of 46 is less than 1/7 of what Bree's threw. Lafell caught 3 of Newton's 21 which works out to 1/7. So as a function of TDs thrown, LaFell was just as productive. In New Orleans system Meachem caught 40 balls which was 6th among receivers. Graham, Colston, and Sproles all caught 80 or more which tops what Smith caught. So do you think all of them would do better than Smith in our system?? Before you say it, I agree they don't even play the same position and function in different roles so you can't compare. But my point is that if all you look at is raw numbers comparing 2 very different systems, you are bound to be comparing apples and oranges to some degree.

Also Meachem has a history of injuries and is considered somewhat of an underacheiver in their system. So again why would we pay money for a guy who is considered an underacheiver in a very receiver friendly system and instantly expect that his production will translate to even more success here? And issues such as his blocking ability are not even being considered which is a huge concern for us given our running game,

No, for me Meachem would not be an upgrade given who we have already. He will want 3-4 million at least which is what he is already making.

Herre is what Rotoworld said about his game in the playoffs against San Francisco.

Meachem saw just four targets, couldn't get open deep against a smothering 49ers secondary, and struggled to make plays after the catch. He ended up missing a considerable chunk of the second half with a leg cramp. Meachem joins Marques Colston as a free agent in March, though we suspect the Saints will place a much higher priority on the more dependable Colston

And if this is how he is in the playoffs, why would this be an upgrade??

^^^P55 it is 2 different systems, but what he does best is get deep down the field. only 1 WR has showed to be able to get vertical on a consitant basis and he is 33. plus you cant count his 4 catches for 111 yards and a TD vs the Lions in playoffs as not performing.

and again LA is a FA and Gettis is coming off a torn acl and the rest of the guys are ?s so why would it hurt to bring in a guy who is know for getting deep down the field.

Meachem gets deep because they have 4 receivers underneath and can't double everyone. He is a 4th receiver there and get covered by linebackers or safeties. As a number 2 as you suggest he would get more double coverage and be in against corners. How well did he get deep against San Francisco. He had a good game against Detroit but again he is inconsistent which is not what we need.

Why would it hurt to bring him in? We are against the cap as it is. We have 2 deep threats in Gettis and Smith who are already signed and we are paying anyway. This isn't Madden, you can't just sign guys to a 3-4 million dollar contract without cutting someone elsewhere. And again I don't think he will be an upgrade at all in our system. if we had unlimited money and could carry a roster of 60 guys then bring him in. But another third or fourth receiver in our system isn't a high priority. We bring in 2 or 3 free agents a year. Would you spend one of your two free agents choices on Meachem or save it for the defensive side? I know I would go defense.
