Steve Smith at the Pro Bowl...

Mr. Scot

again, unfortunately, we have too many more urgent needs to really tackle the job of finding his replacement or a stop gap.

is it risky? yep.

is it a risk that needs to be taken? absolutely.

we can find one in FA or we can find one from the 4th round on, but if we want to progress further than we did this past year then we need to fix the things that held us back. then we can start dealing with trying to fix things that might hold us back down the road.

fix what needs fixing now then deal with what could break.

That's where I disagree.

I agree that there are other issues that need addressing. I don't, however, think that there are so many that there's no room to find an insurance policy for Smith.

And honestly, I wouldn't scream if our first pick was someone like Blackmon or Jeffrey, though I'm not necessarily expecting that.

Here's what it all comes down to for me. Would our offense still be able to do everything they do now if teams did not have to respect the threat of Steve Smith?

you aren't really disagreeing with me, then, because i said "we can find one in FA or we can find one from the 4th round on".

i don't have a problem with that, but that can't be the focus. if we have a chance at someone that drops unexpectedly to the 4th round then we should absolutely jump on it. if blackmon falls to the 8/9 spot where we are, we jump. jeffery....meh. there are about 4 or 5 options just as good as him, imo.

as i've said before, this is a really deep and talented class and someone might tumble.

there is also a lot of talent in FA and because of the depth and talent that is coming out in the draft there might just be a buyers market on FA WRs. teams might start unloading even more (for contract reasons) to make room for WRs they want to draft.

yes, it's something that needs to be addressed at some point. i just don't think we need to have a it as a top priority at this moment as in spending a first or second rounder on it. any time after that i'm cool with it. i just want us to focus on more urgent and pressing matters right now.

There are times when I wish free agency started after the draft rather than before.

Makes more sense to me to draft first, then sign free agents, but the league sees it differently.

Regardless, the one thing I always find funny in offseason discussions is when people say we can't do X because it precludes us from doing Y, which generally isn't true. Discussing which is a higher priority is fun sometimes, but it gets silly when people start talking like you can't do both.

Granted, there are times when you legitimately can't do both X and Y, but they're not as common as people tend to think.

again, you think you are taking a contrary viewpoint but it isn't.

no one is saying we CAN'T address the Oline or that we CAN'T address WR. Most people say that we should, if possible, address both.

you're reading things into discussions that aren't there. you think the majority in here are saying things that they aren't.

the discussion isn't whether we should ignore the offense. it's what should we address first and spend the most, not all, energy on.

I wasn't talking about you, actually.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/aaron-rodgers-disappointed-teammates-effort-pro-bowl-215453448.html

"I'll be honest with you," Rodgers said. "I was a little bit disappointed. I felt like some of the guys on the NFC side embarrassed themselves ... I wanted to know the plays and I wanted to play well, and I wanted to give the fans a show, and make the Green Bay fans who watched and were watching for me and my teammates, I wanted to make them proud of their Pro Bowlers. I was just surprised that some of the guys either didn't want to play or when they were in there didn't put any effort into it."

i'm still not seeing all that many people saying what you seem to think the vast majority is saying.

I've seen more than one poster on here suggest that this team can get a Super Bowl next year with just what we have one at OL and WR.

I'm not buying it.

even if that was being said, more than one does not a majority make.

meh...
