Worth remembering in this discussion that mobile quarterbacks actually tend to get hit / sacked / injured at a higher rate than pocket passers.

The notion that you don't need a quality offensive line if you have a mobile QB is a false premise. I can't think of a single team that's followed that formula and won a Super Bowl.

And those are D-Linemen making those hits? No, it's more often than not a Linebacker or CB making the hit.

wait, who said we don't need a quality offensive line?

The fact is that teams that have weak offensive lines or when facing a defense that has a far superior line to their offense, the quarterbacks that have the most success are the ones that can move the pocket. They move he point of attack for the defense. A mobile quarterback is a plus when this scheme is necessary. Rodgers does this very well. Cam's abilities should prove over time that he is also a cagey manipulator of where the pocket is. This ability does not mean you can pick a line off of the garbage heap but it will help balance the scales if you face a superior D-line or if your O-line happens to be inferior. However you want to look at it, it's the same thing.

It was humor--that is light, Richard. Read it again, and maybe the irony will reveal itself to you. I knew I should have begun with "knock knock,"

ohhh. Hilarious then.

...

Wait. Irony? I picked up on the sarcasm, the first time through and sensed your rage, hence the "Francis" comment. Not picking up on irony. I guess it will "reveal" itself in some other dimension where the word 'irony' has a different definition than it does in this dimension.

Wait. Irony in a knock knock joke? Why would there be a need for irony in a knock-knock joke?

Any offensive linemen we pick up outside of the first 2 rounds is not going to start for us and perform well unless they pick things up much faster than normal. The same could be said of a DT or DE. We also have guys like Schwartz, Bell, Berndeau, and Ziemba who we picked up in the past few years. It seems to me that one or two of those guys could step in if Otah is unwilling to play at a high level. And before we say that a guy like Bell can't play tackle lets remember how many guys struggle their rookie year particularly with no training camp.

I would have no problem is we pick an o-linemen in the fourth round for example, he would serve as a backup and get experience for down the road. You aren't likely to get a RT or LT in free agency due to the cost. The same is true of free agent DEs who are good. We can always go for journeymen and likely will but it is hard to find someone good enough to start that still is relatively cheap.

So for me if you are looking for immediate starters you need to look round 1 or 2. I just don't think the need on O-line outweighs D line. But that is me.

Aaron Rodgers isn't exactly mobile...or he doesn't use his legs much.

wtf...

Rodgers will run up some poo, he'll take hits but mostly he'll gash defenses, running 8-10 yards and go out of bounds or slide. It is overlooked, I love watching Rodgers pass it, I like the way he throws more than any other QB.

How many of those mobile quarterbacks are 6'6" and 250 lbs and stronger than the players doing the tackling. The only one I can think of that is even close is Culpepper. And if I remember correctly we hurt him while he in the pocket. Carmichael was as tall but only 215 lbs. I think he is safer in the open field where he can see people coming at him versus being blindsided. Frankly Cam has stated he believes the same thing as well.

Mobile QB's do not get hit more, sacked more, injured more. They run the ball, know how to run the ball, take a hit, etc. and they have the added benefit of the slide.

I would never refer to a QB who is running for his life on a naked boot and gets creamed because a LB stays home a "mobile" QB.

most mobile QBs in the past have been built like Vick, Armanti Edwards, Pat White, etc. That was the standard mobile QB coming out college. Them getting hit by a LB is going to hurt.

Cam Newton is Julius Peppers playing QB.
