A case for getting another WR

A guy I wouldn't mind in FA that should be relatively cheap is Donnie Avery. He's a playmaker that had a nasty injury he hasn't returned to full form. 1 year vet min contract with an option to extend an extra year. I really don't want to draft any more WR. Maybe after the 2nd it makes sense but our 1st 2 picks will be either OL or D.

Most of you are saying WR is not a need. You give no reason for saying so...
no they aren't.

people are saying it's not a priority on the level of like defense.

most people agree with you. they would just rather see us address other needs first that are keeping us from winning more than our WR corps.

i think people kind of expect us to pick up another WR either a mid-late round draft pick or via FA.

A guy i like a lot is Stephen Hill. Big, athletic kid from Georgia Tech. I actually think his experience in that offense would help him here. Cam likes to sling it down field and Hill made some nice catches in that area for G-Tech.

It would advantageous for us if Bill Belicheat went against his usual method of trading down to acquire more picks and traded up this year. I know folks will say they don't like passing on a top 10 talent but the areas we need help OLB, Safety, Corner and DT are reaches at our current position.

Dream Draft.

1a. Dontari Poe DT / Allows us to play a 3-4 look.

1b. Harrison Smith SS / Upgrade for Martin.

2. Stephen Hill WR / Major upside.

3. Nigel Bradham OLB / Productive linebacker who could start one day.

4. Mitchell Schwartz OG / Missed on Ryan's little brother but can still keep it in the family.

Revamped Defense. Solidify oline.

But the point of this thread was not to say that WR is our biggest priority--some assumed I meant that. Even if I suggested that we draft WR in the first, it does not mean that. People on here twist any post so they can argue against it. The stats do not lie--we need a WR.

I agree with what you say about WR, Rayzor, but I am concerned that we are not going to improve until we get a threat across from Steve Smith. Our #1 WR is 33 years old and lying about being 5'9". Our second best WR had under 500 yards receiving in his best year-averaging 30 yards per game. Putting that into perspective, my high school ran a wishbone triple option and I was the tight end--I averaged more yards per game than that.

Hard to find a threat in the mid to late rounds. --maybe we actually bring in a solid WR in free agency like you suggest. BUt Hurney says we are building through the draft, so getting an established WR is going to be hard. It seems our entire WR roster, including SS, is mid to late rounders. I am concerned that we would be piling more mediocrity on the heap. If Gettis steps up and becomes a star, problem solved.

I think the Panthers absolutely need another WR on the roster - but I don't think they should waste a draft pick on it when they should be using it on adding depth on defense. With Smith, LaFell, Gettis, Edwards and Pilares - they have enough young WR to last until next year's draft. They can sign a free agent receiver and do just as well.

but we have improved dramatically.

we went form being the worst and most pathetic offense in the league to becoming one of the most potent and dangerous offenses in the league...

...with an old WR that most thought was on his last leg

...with a rookie QB coming from a spread "run option" offense

...with a new scheme

...with no offseason to speak of

...with a gimpy right side of the oline

...with a rookie udfa starting at RT most of the season

why didn't we win? it wasn't because of the offense. it was because of the defense.

if we want to get better as a team and win games. if we want to be able to finish what the offense starts...then we are going to have to have a defense that isn't going to piss it all away.

you want to help out the offense? to help out cam? quit making him have to work so hard and let the defense keep the score down. quit putting him behind the 8 ball and have a defense that won't give up 2 or 3 TD leads. have a defense that can actually protect the leads that cam and this "pile of mediocrity" of an offense.

the TEAM gets better when it becomes more complete. we will see more wins. that is what we want, right?

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
