A case for getting another WR

Haha! Bleys I think a dominant WR would be key and if it takes a high draft pick to get one, we should do it.

I have a funny feeling (based on majority of ladies who frequently have Aunt Flow visiting week to week, you know who you are) that when our defense can't stop offenses from scoring, that 1 additional receiver will be forgotten when the offense was already effective despite a totally ineffective defense...

Now, WHY was Steve Smith, at age 32, in the game on nearly 92% of the plays? Because he defense LOADED the box with safeties when he was out. They do not fear Lafell or Naanee. We need 2 WRs who threaten the defense. Is Gettis that WR? I do not think he is. Smith will be 33 next year. Gettis comes back on a surgically repaired knee, Naanee is a free agent, and Lafell was decent vs. #3 CBs.

Where exactly do you propose we get this second WR? I don't see any team letting go of a WR that will command a double team and I don't think a rookie will come in and do that either.

And I have a funny feeling that when our offense stalls in critical spots because Cam has nowhere to go you'll have a funny feeling in your vagina that it's time to complain about our defense.

Looking at other teams

Saints Colston/Meacham/Moore/Henderson/TE=Graham

Packers Jennings/Driver/Nelson'Jones/Cobb/TE=Finley

Colts Wayne/Garcon/Gonzales/Collie/TE= Clark

All have a Superstar #1 WR

All have TE's that are very active in their passing attack

All have great QB's {Colts Peyton}

Number 2 /3/4 WR's are good

But are they good B/C of their QB ?

Would they be good on any other team ?

Cam is the missing factor in Panthers equation of needing another WR in draft

Cam /Chud/ Ricky Prohel made Lafell what he was this season

Last season Lafell could not even get on the field

Especially given our history of WR busts over a decade and more it makes TOTAL sense to draft one in the first round.
just thought i would follow that train of thought to the logical conclusion.

i don't have a problem with us drafting a WR this year...as long as it isn't in the first round and i don't particularly care for one in the 2nd either. i'd rather find one in FA. i'd rather us try and pick one up later in the draft than use up a pick on something that is more of a priority.

i don't doubt that smitty might need some help. i don't doubt that we need to be looking at getting his eventual replacement.

what i doubt is the urgency of it being considered anything close to the urgency that is fixing the defense.

as-is, our offense was 7th in yards/game, 4th in yards/play, and 5th in points per game. 8th in 1st downs/game, and 10th in 3rd down conversions.

we have no problem getting the ball down the field, getting first downs, and very little problem getting into the endzone. true, teams may be adjusting to cam this offseason, but the counterpoint there is cam is just getting used to the pro game and he has yet to have a full offseason and he has a year under his belt that he didn't have before. consider me not all that concerned.

and this is considered to be just the tip of the iceburg here with us having a full offseason coming up and all of the offensive staff returning. not to mention a few players returning from IR like schwartz. gettis, and otah...all 3 of which could very well make the offense better.

meanwhile on defense.....

28th in yards allowed/game, 30th in yards allowed/play

27th in points allowed/game

23rd in 1st downs allowed, 27th in 3rd down conversions allowed

the passing defense was 24th in yards/game allowed, 25th in passing TDs allowed, and a QB rating of 98.3 (3rd worst in the league.

the run defense was 25th in yards/carry, 29th in rushing TDs allowed. 25th in carries of 20+ yards and 26th in carries of 40+ yards.

sure, we have beason coming back as well as TD and ron edwards and a few other players. is beason coming back enough to get us to even being a mediocre defense? i dunno. can we count on TD coming back and lasting more than a couple games? i dunno. are we sure than edwards coming back...and older guy that has never played here before and coming off a biceps tear? i dunno.

i do know that defense is in a lot worse shape than the offense. it's not even close. sure, it would be nice to just focus on the overall BPA, but imo, we don't have the luxury of being able to just do that. fixing he defense has to be the biggest priority of the offseason. if that means passing up on a "better" WR prospect so that we can take someone who can fix a more immediate need, so be it.

the offense was good enough to get us in the lead in most of our games. it was good enough to give us 10 wins. the defense cost us leads. the defense cost us wins. if we continue to ignore the defense and make it less of a priority we will keep on forcing the offense behind the 8 ball and we will continue to see us blowing leads and losing games.

I would love to get a #1 reciver but why not try to get one in the latter rounds. Someone like a Dwight Jones. Also why not try to get a WR in free agency? I am sure we could find a good #2 in free agency and maybe we could get someone who is old for a vet min contract. I am on the Blackmon bandwagon but I do feel that we need to improve our defense and Lafell is doing well enough to be our #2 and maybe Gettis could end up being a good WR.

I like the Vet F/A idea

Why keep drafting WR's If the next year you still want to draft WR rather than let the WR's you've already drafted develop!

Give Prohel a chance to work with Gettis.

Lafell already looks better after working with Prohel
