A case for getting another WR

Sorry I could not come up with a new slant on the logo, uniforms, what Cam had for breakfast or what kind of dog he had as a kid. I have no insight into what the 50 yard line will look like or what was said on the Buccaneers' site.

This article is very interesting because these numbers state why we need to consider a quality WR in 2012. I know some of you say, "No, we don't need another wr--we need defense." I cannot argue with that brand of logic. Consider the fact that on each play on average, a WR sprints 10-20 yards per play; a game can have up to about 70 offensive plays. When the game is on the line and they are running pass routes on every play, they have essentially been sprinting (with a few breaks) for 3 hours. The best offense in the division, New Orleans, features 4 WRs, a pass catching RB, and a stud TE. All 3 of our WRs were on the field more than any Saint WRs. We lost games in the second half a bunch. Hmmm. Did they slow down as the game progressed?

Now, WHY was Steve Smith, at age 32, in the game on nearly 92% of the plays? Because he defense LOADED the box with safeties when he was out. They do not fear Lafell or Naanee. We need 2 WRs who threaten the defense. Is Gettis that WR? I do not think he is. Smith will be 33 next year. Gettis comes back on a surgically repaired knee, Naanee is a free agent, and Lafell was decent vs. #3 CBs.

Here is the article:

By Pat Yasinskas

His 2011 season wasn’t as spectacular as his 2010 rookie campaign, but Tampa Bay’s Mike Williams still was on the field more frequently than any other NFC South wide receiver.

Williams took part in 94.5 percent of Tampa Bay’s offensive snaps. He was on the field for 965 of Tampa Bay’s 1,021 offensive plays.

Carolina’s Steve Smith and Atlanta’s Roddy White each played more snaps, but came up short of the percentage of plays Williams was in for. Williams’ percentage of playing time ranked No. 4 in the NFL.

Smith ranked No. 7 in the NFL, taking part in 91.4 percent of Carolina’s snaps. He was on the field for 956 of Carolina’s 1,046 plays. White was involved in 90.5 percent of Atlanta’s offensive plays. He was on the field for 1,020 of Atlanta’s 1,227 offensive snaps.

Let’s take a look at other NFC South receivers and the playing time they got in 2011:

•Legedu Naanee, Panthers: 70.8 percent.

•Brandon LaFell, Panthers, 65.9 percent.

•Robert Meachem, Saints, 64.4 percent.

•Devery Henderson, Saints, 62.8 percent.

•Julio Jones, Falcons, 62.6 percent.

•Marques Colston, Saints, 57.2 percent.

•Harry Douglas, Falcons, 55.4 percent.

•Arrelious Benn, Buccaneers, 49.2 percent.

•Dezmon Briscoe, Buccaneers, 46.6 percent.

•Preston Parker, Buccaneers, 45.6 percent.

•Lance Moore, Saints, 36 percent.

•Eric Weems, Falcons, 24.1 percent.

•Sammie Stroughter, Buccaneers, 6.66 percent.

•Micheal Spurlock, Buccaneers, 4.7 percent.

•Seyi Ajirotutu, Panthers, 4.59 percent.

•Adrian Arrington, Saints, 4.51 percent.

•Kerry Meier, Falcons, 3.02 percent.

•Armanti Edwards, Panthers. 2.39 percent.

•Kealoha Pilares, Panthers, 2.01 percent

All 3 of our WRs are in the top 5 in the division.

however... let's start a new thread on why we should draft a WR in the 1st round...

Gettis will be fine with his knee. LaFell was pretty damn good against #2 CB's when he started and the TE's and RB's are big parts of our passing game.

Definitely not a big need, but you could justify it if the right guy is available.

I think it is big need though I wouldn't support it with the analytics above. I'd like to see some big time talent opposite Smith for once in 10 years, we've been in poverty at #2 WR for far too long. That said, great QBs can make great things happen with average guys (see Brees and his general assembly, Graham excepted) and perhaps we have that in Cam.

I don't know why everyone is so sure about how gettis will be as a WR. We've seen VERY little of him. Yes, he looked decent, but so did Keary Colbert that one year. Before we put him at #2 and say we're fine at WR, lets see how he performs in our new offense first in only his second year.

Exactly. It's very strange.

it's pretty simple.. I'm confused on why you all can't figure this out... we have a high octane offense thus far with a very pitiful defense, and yet you can't figure out why our 5th option shouldn't have an opportunity before we ignore our defense despite the positive contribution he has shown the year prior?

I don't think it is that simple bleys. I don't think NFL teams are that simple. And I'm not convinced one key move for the better on offense wouldn't improve our defense exponentially.

I agree, our defense is in obvious need, and I'm not even arguing we take a WR high unless he's...Blackmon, I guess, but I think a dominant WR would add every bit as much if not more to this team than a defensive player.

WR is a huge need more so due to Hurney's inability to get one with #1 potential.

Still it's after CB and DT and maybe even S.

Gettis showed some skill but people on this board take him way too seriously, he still has a lot to prove.

so we agree then... and so it is that simple.

sounds like we agree... or that people take our defense to seriously...

    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
