John Madden retires from broadcasting...

For all the jokes about Madden (and plenty of them deserved) he's still been arguably the best football broadcaster of all time. His voice defined the football season.

I will be sad to see him go.

I would give u the most popular and most well known.. but the best?? give me a break.

On overall body of work, yes I'd call him the best.

Madden's been doing it for longer than some folks on this board have even been alive. And yes, of late he's become a caricature, but I remember his years with Pat Summerall. They were easily the best football announce team in the game (arguably of all time).

I agree with you Mr. Scot. I always liked Summerall and Madden as a team. Unfortunately, age caught up with both of them, just like it will for all of us.:(

Here here Mr. Scot. I remember those day of Pat Summerall and John Madden.

He was blue collar. His style was the NFL, blue collar. He brought that flair and fire he had as a coach into the broadcast booth. He taught America football. The telistrator was HIS tool. He taught our brothers and sisters the game of football. He eduated our moms and our dads were happy to learn more about the game. He taught us not everyone was a big name player. His All-Madden teams were as big an honor (in the beginning) as the Pro-Bowl to some.

His insight, his wisdom and his udying love for the game made him an Icon in the NFL. I for one and most of us who remember him as the Coach of the RAIDERS know what a true character he was of the game. Say what you will about John Madden but I for one think our game just took a small step backwards. Finding a replacement as good as he was will be tough.

I WILL MISS HIM....

Go Luck John Madden in your retirement. You will be missed.

Go Panthers

I had forgotten that the telestrator started with Madden.

Good summary. And don't forget he's the face of one of the best and most popular video game franchises of all time.

Despite my buddy's best efforts, his ten year old son never had much interest in football. I introduced him to Madden 07, and now he's virtually obsessed. He watches old school NFL Films, checks out books to read the history of NFL teams, and even watches games with me and his dad and chimes in his own insights (and they're good ones too).

This past Halloween, he dressed in a suit, put powder in his hair and a pillow under his shirt, drew up a play on an erasable board and walked around going "BOOM". His dad and I thought it was hilarious (we had to explain it to his mom)
