Fletcher Cox - DT - Miss St.

That's really how I feel but I'm no expert about the whole draft process. I just think he's easily the top DT prospect overall and can fit either a 3-4 or 4-3 and be very fitting for our hybrid 3-4 packages (3-4 is simply his niche but it doesn't prove he can't play a 4-3)....and I don't think he'll need to bulk up a huge amount. He's strong as fug just slightly off-balanced when he get's over-aggressive.

Still's injury history concerns me and Brockers is a shot in the dark with the ability to be a huge run stopper in the league. I think Cox is an all around player who can run stuff and create pressure along with blocking field goals and deflecting balls with his athletic ability. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing Brockers but Cox has a big resume to show and stood out on an already solid Miss St. d.

Draft experts never really know anything though. So much of it is just one guy copying another guy to infinitum. That's why there are so many surprises on draft day. Everyone gets too comfortable with the box that the media's built. I say fug that, if you like a prospect, you like a prospect. Do your own scouting, make your own decision and if you think he's a winner, fug where he's projected.

I just wanna bump this to throw out what he did at the combine midst the noise for Brockers & Poe:

a 1.63 10yd split...he weighed in at 298...6'4

Talk about a stud for someone who can play 3, 5, and 9 tech while also able to go to the outside. With Edwards back as a NT...if we're talking someone who can outperform McClain, Fua, Shirley, Kearse, etc. I think he could be the guy and I wouldn't mind him at all at 8 or 9.

I won't be posting for some time but I've grown in the direction of 3 particular players I'd like with that 1st pick (minus any surprise fallers):

No particular order--

Cox, Brockers, & Kirkpatrick

We got some time, but I think these guys will interview best, have great pro-days down in SEC country and have our defensive minded coaches salivating (Mixon term ftw) at the opportunity to get em'

The more I see of this guy, the more I like him.

Great motor, fast, can penetrate, and has a body that could carry another 20 lbs with ease.

Frankly, it is hard to understand why this guy doesn't get more attention. Right now, I like him quite a bit better than Brockers.

FLETCHER COX

6'4 295 DT/DE Miss St.

14.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He also had 56 tackles, two blocked kicks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery that he returned for 52 yards...in the SEC. His strengths are in his quickness off the ball, overall power, special teams d-line. The weaknesses: he struggles once he's double teamed, but that's not a huge negative for me. The one's of more concern are that he can get a little out of control/off balance because he tries to be overly aggressive.

One of the really nice things to point out is that he took care of business quite well against Bama' this year and is probably one of the most overall consistent defensive players in the draft. He also is said to be a very high character type who was a player's player for Miss St.

The one thing is that he may be better suited for a 3-4...he plays the 5 technique but would be able to go 3-tech in our 4-3 sets. He can move to the ends also because of his quickness and physicality. He can definitely fill gaps up against the run and his athleticism should translate well into the NFL.

I guarantee that our staff is giving Cox a hard look. If we somehow trade down or he magically falls to us in round 2, he'd be someone to consider.

Good call. He was doubled a lot. Ran a 4.8 40 which shows athleticism and why he could go to a 3-4 team. He could sneak into the top 15, but is likely a lower first round pick after the combine.

Be warned, however: According to a recent research report about DTs being drafted in the first round--something like 38% success rate over the last 5 years or so. The reason? I think their athleticism is improving because the college game is spreading out, they are becoming workout warriors. They are pushed into the fray too early. They are drafted too early based on need.

Buyer beware. Sorry, I could not provide the link because I dont want to find it--I posted it here at the time it came out.
