Your 1st Round Top-4

Recommended Posts

1. Michael Brockers

2. Janoris Jenkins

3. David DeCastro--even though its common to find guards in the later rounds

4. Quentin Coples, simply due to his talent

I envision scenarios where we could trade back, no lower than 12, and get any of these four guys.

Kalil, Claiborne and Reiff are my top 3. These guys are elite talents in our areas of need. After that, things get really fuzzy. It's either not a top need or not a top talent. I'm not sure if I like Upshaw because he'll be playing in a 43 and I dunno about his coverage skills. I really want Brockers to show me more in the combine or something because god knows we need a DT. Still's injuries really scare me. I'm sick of our 1st round picks going down.

Edit: Just watched the tape of Zach Brown vs Missouri and you can color me highly unimpressed. When you think of an NFL LB you think of guys who can come in, stuff the run and smash someone. This guy's like the opposite of that. He looked like such a 'finesse player'. He doesn't know how to tackle (both with angles and not wrapping up), he's constantly taken out of the play, the only real strength I see in his game is his speed and coverage. Do not want.

1a)Claiborne

2b)Kalil

3)Blackmon

4) Martin

for us, unfortunately i doubt the top 3 of them are there. also to me Kalil and Claiborne are co #1, i just think mo is a better right now guy, and if otah ever gets healthy, we may be ok at tackle for 4 more years. we need a #2 cb, and gamble would be a great #2 along with big mo.

now the likely top 4)

1a) Martin: imo he makes gross or otah expendable. if we kept all of them, otah goes inside and gross to RT till his contract is up. martin is not the most athletic T but damn good technician.

1b)Reiff: RT/G now and LT later otah RT/G now, RT/gone later.

3)Jenkins. be a physical #2 or #1 corner. likes press coverage.

4)Coples/Brockers. they are the next best guys, homeruns or they strike out. do you want edge pressure, or inside pressure? honestly i would likely give Coples the edge even with the inconsistent motor. they guy can turn it on and dominate top tackles when he really gets after it. Brockers, if he developes, could be Suh-lite or Fairley. if he doesnt a nobody. i think Coples development so far is way ahead of brockers and could contribute more now (though long term i still like hardy).

personally i want to tade back and get more picks: Cincy if Richardson fell and they want to leapfrog a few teams if he fell to our spot, or hell anyone wanting Martin or Reiff and were willing to part with atleast a #1 this year and more.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
