If Peppers doesnt sign prior to DRAFT..

Ok, no play, no pay, get that part.

Does that free up the 17 mil for us to use, or does it STILL count against our cap?

Sorry for being so uninformed about this stuff.

It counts against us until that date in July, if I am understanding correctly...

On a positive note, should Pep decide to sit out next season, we'll be in pretty good cap shape heading into next offseason...

On an even more positive note, it'll be nice to have that much cap room and a Lombardi Trophy!

I believe the Cap Space counts against us as long as we have the tag applied....not until July.

Yeah, I should have been a little more clear. It will count against us until next offseason, but after July 15, to be specific, we should have a good idea if it will actually "count" as in Peppers playing as a Panther... If not, we don't have to pay him, although it still "counts" against us... at least I think...

Players negotiating under the Franchise designation have until July 15 in the year of designation to negotiate a multi-year contract with their prior club. After that date, the player may only sign the one-year tender offer with his prior club.

Well if that is true, then I know I want him gone now. I would rather have the money, and more picks to shore up other needs on our team, instead of having him sitting on his lazy ass doing nothing, while we still don't have the 17 mil to use, even though we don't have to pay him. Sucks

Get da steppin...........

I think he is trying to push carolina into releasing him by cash strapping them as long as possible.

that dumbass Marty Hurney could have not tagged him at all and avoided all of this. He is an idiot for not seeing this coming and will only redeem himself if he pulls a rabbit out of the hat.

Why does your statement make out like its Pep's fault? At the very least it's 50-50 blame and if you factor in that Pep has fulfilled ALL of his contractual obligations and given Carolina ALL of his NFL career thus far without incident, you have to be looking at Marty and the FO as the ones holding the big sack of blame on this. Their poor foresight, bruised egos, and pure greed have shot this off season straight to hell.

I would be willing to bet that 90% of this board was screaming for Hurney to Tag Peppers, myself included, and when he did everyone was happy. I still think that it was the best move possible.

I wanted Pep to walk and stated as such. yeah it looks foolish initially but how bad does it look now. And yes there is that old saying about hindsight but the elements that made not tagging him a simple decision were/are obvious and glaring.

The one that sticks out to me the most:

using the tag on Gross instead of locking up an undersized and average left tackle for 6 years when you are very close to having the best rushing attack in the league.

let pep walk..so what, tag gross, trade Gross after this season even if you have to use the tag again and get a young LT in the draft.

I disagree..the Panthers have every right to tag Peppers regardless if he has fulfilled his contract. You dont let a franchise type player just walk away without compensation. So you think the Bears should have just let Lance Briggs walk, or Haynsworth should have been let go last year just 2 examples..Peppers is counting 2, yes JUST 2 million more against the cap this year than what he cost us last year..If they need cap space BELIEVE me they can muster up space with a few moves easily.

No way do you let Pep walk, thats just crazy, throws all logic out the window. We wanted to give him the highest defensive contract ever...he doesnt want to be here...TOO BAD, somebody wants him they can have him, just pay us market value..First and a Third.

And you dont find "average" tackles like Jordan Gross on the street...Injury free, durable, dynamic dominating tackles dont just appear in every draft. Good luck with that idea...

From what I have read, Peppers will count against the cap until the 10th game of the regular season if he continues to hold out. His salary will not apply after that. I have read somewhere that the comissioner could give us cap relief before that but would be unlikely to do so unless there were unusual circustances.

If he holds out is he still our property next year and can we franchise him next year or is he is a free agent and can he go anywhere?

Let's hope it doesn't go that far. If it does, the more appropriate question is gonna be "who is gonna die for this"?
