Bucs going after another college coach...Schiano from Rutgers to be announced soon

he's known for being a good guy, a good recruiter, and a good program builder. i can see him being about ideal for a college program. how much recruiting is involved in the pros? the responsibilities for being a college head coach are pretty different as is the type/age players that you are going to be coaching. i just think in that regard he's getting in over his head.

here's the big thing for me, though. he's also known for being a good game planner, so much so that he has belicheat vouching for him (well, it could be that he's vouching for him being a good guy and a sold college coach. how does he know, btw...did they ever work together?).

anyways....a good game planner, but not known for making adjustments during the game all that well. he'll come in with a good game plan, but the other team adjusts while he stick to the same plan and he ultimately gets out-coached.

also, while college football has turned into much more of a passing game using spread offenses and such, he's holding fast to an old school, smash mouth, run first, ball control type game and as such, he can't really keep up with the joneses.

many people who watch rutgers felt that he was holding the team back because of these things.

i think he'll be seen as a stabilizing force in tampa, but one in which they will have a pretty low ceiling. unless he can bring in an OC with a dynamic and progressive approach to the game and is allowed the freedom and given the personnel needed to call a game that can compete with the high scoring offenses that are in the NFC, esp. the NFCS, they will result in failure more often than not.

i just don't see that happening with this throwback of a coach.

i've heard that jon gruden may be the reason chip kelly turned them down.

supposedly gruden and kelly became good friends a couple years back when gruden went and spent time with kellly to learn about the spread offense.

when kelly was close to accepting the job he talked to gruden who advised against it because of how bad it was working for the glazers and the bucs org. apparently they are pretty well known for being cheap w/ their coaches as well.

just not a good reputation around the league. they got who they could.
