Realistic but unlikely best-case-scenario Panthers draft

1) Colts take Luck as expected

2) Redskins trade with the Rams, moving up to take RGIII

3) Vikings - Matt Kalil

4) Browns - Justin Blackmon

5) Bucs - Trent Richardson

6) Rams - Riley Reiff

7) Jaguars - Quinton Coples

8) Panthers - Morris Claiborne

Coples off the board in the top 10, the next DE taken is Melvin Ingram at #20 to the Titans.

The Panthers then package their 2nd rounder plus a mid round pick (maybe throw in Jimmy Clausen to sweeten the deal) and trade with the Patriots

Moving up to 27th overall the Panthers select Whitney Mercilus

after that just go BPA and make sure you get a kicker and punter in the 6th/7th to replace the dumbfugs we have now and you're golden

lol honestly i don't think it's all that unrealistic
There is a higher chance of Kalil falling to us than Claiborne.

Also why in God's green earth would the Patriots take that trade? Especially when they have Mallet?

franchise LT falling before a CB? lol no

Patriots always look to trade down, even if they have to give a discount. I was joking about the Clausen part. They'd most likely take a high 2nd and a 4th or 5th for the 27th overall

The Kalil part was a joke. Just trying to say it won't happen. Also that deal would be nice I just can't see it happening. I have us drafting Coples.

Most mocks have going Claiborne going #3 to the Vikes but that's only because they have the Rams taking Kalil and aren't adding in trades. I fully expect the Rams to trade the pick and then the Vikings having one of the worst OLines in football and a young QB will most likely go Kalil.

After that the Bucs would be the only team I'd worry about, and I think that's most likely where he'll land. But if they fall in love with Richardson that could change.

The Bucs would be absolutely retarded if they passed on Claiborne to take Richardson.

...and then again, this is the Bucs. Making retarded moves is kinda what they do.

If the Rams trade and the Vikings go Kalil as I expect I'll be crossing my fingers when the Bucs are on the clock. Even if we lose the coinflip and pick 9th I don't see any other team taking Claiborne in that scenario other than the Bucs.

damn you tampa bay, do something stupid, it's what you're good at!

BTW I did say in the title even that this was "unlikely"

I would be ecstatic if Claiborne fell to us (would actually hate a trade down in that scenario), then we could get Markelle Martin in the 2nd (don't think there'll be any DTs there that would be significant upgrades over Neblett/Kearse/Shirley, and I'd rather have Martin than one of those tiny OLBs that are talked up in the 2nd - Spence, etc).

Not that I'd mind Spence, but not with one of our first two picks. If he's there with our 4th round pick, or if we trade down and can have a couple picks to spend on a CB/DT/S/bigger impact player and then use our 3rd pick on him.

Tampa Bay needs CB in the worst way. Barber is going to retire (or should) and the other is possibly headed to prison. RBs are becoming non-essential personnel, to a degree. Teams are keeping two or three, usually with varying skill sets.

I see no way they do not take Claiborne at #5. Secondly, if he drops to #7, Dallas will trade up to get him before we do.

The only way I think this could have happened was probably slammed when Kirkpatrick got busted for weed. TB MAY have preferred the bigger CB.

Stranger things have happened, however.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
