Coples at Senior Bowl

It's so funny to see all these people put Julius down like he wasn't one of the best players in the league when he was here. Coples has done exactly what he should have. He's a likely top 10 pick and is 100% healthy. Watch him dominate in the league.

When he wanted to be he was, sure.

The problem was he very rarely wanted to be considered the best player in the league - well not unless it was a contract year, or if the spotlight was on him (Rookie season & any prime time games).

 people comparing coples to mario?

wow.

Different players for sure but very similar skill sets. Mock drafts before this past season had Cope at #2 behind Luck, exactly where Mario went. Considering the debacle at UNC with impending infractions, coaching changes, a lost season or possibly two previously projected in the top ten in the nation and the fact that there was never a knock on his "motor" prior to this past season under these conditions allows me to bestow the benefit of the doubt.

So for me its a trust but verify situation and there will be plenty of opportunities for him to prove his abilities in the coming months.

I don't see how he deserves the death penalty at this point and I don't see any pundits saddling him with that level of doubt since the Senior Bowl practices started.

I have heard that the initial burst is in question by some. I don't think he has what JPP has in that category either but it remains to be seen if those opinions are enough to drop his status.

Still lots to evaluate here.

:cheers2:

As much as I have defended Coples I still don't really want us to draft him even if he is there unless we can move him inside.

The Tar Heel I would like to see us draft is Zach Brown. He is a perfect fit for what we try to do on defense with our linebackers. His only question mark is whether he can consistently hold his edge. But he shoots the gaps better than anyone in this draft which is a big part of our defense and he is good in coverage because he runs about a 4.4 40. Unfortunately we are picking too high to draft him at #8 and he likely will be gone by our second round pick.

the issue for me, though, ins't him proving himself in coming months.

i KNOW how massively talented he is. i KNOW that he can dominate. people are seeing exactly what he is capable of now and they will for the next few months.

the issue for me is why we didn't see that more while at carolina. some of you may have seen that, but i just don't/didn't.

there's no denying his talent and potential. i think there is serious reasons to doubt his drive. when times gets tough, what is he going to do? is he going to be showing the constant hustle he is now or is he going to be just trying to make a big play every now and then?

i don't know. i just know that i haven't seen the motor, enthuisiasm, or hustle that i like to see in a top 10 pick. i don't see the level of commitment that i want to see.

if the panthers draft him, i'll be a believer until proven otherwise because i've got faith in rivera and hurney(at least in picking first rounders). until that point, though, i'll be hoping for someone else to gamble on him.

I have a completely unbiased opinion, considering I am not a fan of UNC/NC St/Clemson/USC, etc.. and I don't watch much ACC football.

Coples looks like he would be dominant if he applied himself 100%. I have seen him when he gives 100% effort and he flat out dominates. Other times, it just seems like he doesn't even try. He reminds me very much of JP in that regard. I don't think his motor is great, and I don't know how much he loves the game.

He is flat out dominating everyone opposite of him at the senior bowl. He came to play.. but of course he going to put his best foot forward.. that is a very impressive foot. You'd have to be a confident coach that you can keep this guy motivated.

that's pretty much where i am.

the biuggest problem is i see people that you have to work at to keep motivated or are hoping for a coach that can keep him motivated as a red flag or at the very least a big bright waving yellow caution flag...esp. when you are talking about taking them so early.

I agree. My biggest problem is when you add money in to this situation motivation gets harder to muster.

I was like you about Pep until his own teamates started ?ing his effort.

Beason did it on the radio in charlotte.

Mario Williams had motivational question marks about him predraft, Big athletic guy who scouting reports said was prone to taking plays off and didn't give 100% effort. Some scouting reports had him as a longshot to be a success in the NFL because of that effort. Same thing with Peppers as well.

Williams ran a 4.7, same thing that Coples has been clocked around.

While still having him as 1st or 2nd in the draft really?

Actually yes, according to a few review sites and a couple articles on the Texans picking Williams. I'm not sure why other then the questioning of his effort. Those scouts didn't have him in the top 10.

It's kinda like whats happening with Coples, the scouts who question his effort are saying he isn't worth a top 10 pick. Those who don't think it's a big deal have him as the 2nd - 5th best prospect in the draft.

Everybody has Coples as top 10. Mario was rated as top 2 big difference.
