Coples at Senior Bowl

Everything I've seen at the Senior Bowl confirms what I saw during the season - looks the part, but lacks that elite acceleration to get him round the edge against NFL LTs.

He's a small DT.

You must not have read this...

During one-on-one pass rush, both Alabama DE/ OLB Courtney Upshaw and UNC DE Quinton Coples stood out. With Upshaw, there is enormous power to his game but he also demonstrated the ability to use his hands (and multiple moves) to win. With Coples, we are looking at a legit edge rusher. Speed to turn the corner and athletic ability that isn't matched by anyone on the field for his size (6-6, 281).

This guy is a pass rusher in the mold of the greats of the last 10 years. Mario, Tuck, Pep, now Pierre Paul and Aldon Smith in recent years...They all have elite speed and that 6'5'' 280lb frame. He WILL BE the best pass rusher in this class and I just hope that a team ahead of us doesn't snag him.

Who the hell cares that he slacked while he was at Carolina? He played for one of the worst coaching staffs in the entire nation. He played DT really well as a Sophomore and then showed he had edge pass-rushing ability as an upperclassman. Like I said...I hope he's there and I hope we take him to put with CJ, Hardy, Edwards and the other DTs.

I don't need to read up on players when I've seen them play games AND watched them practice. I make my own judgement.

To me Coples lacks an elite burst around the outside. Don't get me wrong I'd be delighted to pick him up in the 20s, but not at #8/9, that's reserved for the elite players.

hopefully any team that is concerned about a player that will give it 100% any time they are on the field.

Same questions were raised about Mario when he came out...I'm guessing the Texans are pretty happy they didn't pass on him right about now. Believe me, I hated Quinton Coples when he was playing for Carolina. I thought he was a slacker and didn't utilize his talent. But IMO that had to do more with the slack ass loser coaching staff he was playing for. Same could be said for Mario.

Rayzor is correct and some people can act dumb all they want but Coples motor and motivation were ? before the season and they remain now.

All these excuse are stupid also.

1. The coaches that ? him got fired. Really???

Only way dude would have kept that job is if they won they acc or went to a BCS game. He was out before the season started.

2. Mario Williams was ? also. Really???

Mario Williams was a top 2 pick whatever ? teams had were not anywhere near Coples situation.

3. He look great in Senior bowl practice.

So did Terell Mcclain and Marvin Austin (still 2nd and 3rd round picks) last year. Also against 3rd and 4th round Tackles and Guards.

Most of the best Olinemen in this draft are underclassmen.

Point is if you have ? about somebody motivation it gets worst when they get paid.

Most of the time.

Let the Jags fall into that trap.

Mario Williams had motivational question marks about him predraft, Big athletic guy who scouting reports said was prone to taking plays off and didn't give 100% effort. Some scouting reports had him as a longshot to be a success in the NFL because of that effort. Same thing with Peppers as well.

Williams ran a 4.7, same thing that Coples has been clocked around.

Every elite pass rusher will be questioned. There will always be concerns. The concerns are usually the same. The fact is that real pass rushers who have the hands, leverage, strength, arm length, speed, height, and technique should take "plays off" when they can.

You see if you have all those things like Peppers, Williams, and yes Coples has, your job is sometimes done before the ball snaps. You have altered the play call and the protection in the other team's huddle before they even line up. Busting your ass to chase with backside pursuit with two guys in your face is a waste of your motor. Instincts for some are better than others so an argument can be made that cutbacks, busted plays, reversed fields that happen occasionally could hurt the team if a guy is in la la land like some of you are suggesting.

I am suggesting that you will not find an instance where that happened and caught any of these guys off guard.

Also, the notion that if you don't go all out all the time I get it. I like a wild man flying around out there too. But the pros know when that type of approach is effective and when it is wasted. They are coached. They don't roll their eyes at their position coach every practice who is always on their ass telling them that they are lazy and that they need to stop taking plays off.

Some of you armchair QB's and cubicle GM's are carelessly using the "taking plays off" moniker.

The bowl game footage is irrelevant to me although I don't see him playing poorly. There was a new coach named and a lame duck coach in charge and several players said they never even put the spread in until they got to shreveport despite weeks of time to prepare for it. They never should have gone. By the time they paid for all the vacant seats in their allotment the school made less than the travel expenses if anything at all. It was a complete mail-in for everyone.

It's so funny to see all these people put Julius down like he wasn't one of the best players in the league when he was here. Coples has done exactly what he should have. He's a likely top 10 pick and is 100% healthy. Watch him dominate in the league.
