Coples at Senior Bowl

Million dollar question. Say we draft Coples at 8/9th, and Brockers slips into the late teens-early twenties. Do you trade up to grab him or stand pat?
i would take brockers over coples.

i'm sure that he's tearing it up in practice and he's really motivated today but i don't expect to see the same things that are seen today on a weekly basis once he gets paid.

i saw bunting or someone say that while they were impressed with how he looked it concerned them even more because now they have to ask the question why they didn't see that level of play in the games they watched.

call me stupid, but i don't trust his motor or his level of motivation. i don't question it now (this week) because he's a man trying to get paid. it's the rest of the time that i don't trust.

i do think that he should be moved inside, but the fact that he has lost the weight he has coming into the senior bowl tells me that he's not interested in being the versatile player people are billing him as. he wants to be a DE.

something just doesn't click with this guy.

i won't bring up the character stuff anymore, but i will question that motor and i just hope that i'm wrong if the panthers draft him.

His coach was fired, the environment was crazy at UNC, had a different head coach and switched positions for the third time in a three year span as a senior. Also saw what happened with Bruce Carter after his injury, combine all those things and you can see why UNC didn't play up to it's talent.

Those things would mess with most adults in their 30's much less a guy in his early 20's.

I'd be very nervous if we drafted him. However, I trust Hurney with number one picks. I HIGHLY doubt Rivera would want someone who didn't have a good drive for the game. That seems to be a stickler for him.

pretty spot on about how I feel about this.

I watch UNC games, and there's a hell of a lot to love about him. I won't be mad if we pick him. He's versatile and I think at worst he'll be a 7-8 sacks a season guy.

But his motor and effort scare me sometimes. I hope I'm wrong aout him if we do pick him.

If Hurney and Rivera feel he's the BPA, I trust their decision

Why not CJ, Edwards, Coples, Hardy? of sub out Edwards for McClain, Neblett.

I honestly like where we are with our young DT's. The only one I'm not impressed with is Fua and we now have others who could play NT.

Agree! Hardy played inside quite a bit this year, so this would give us a significant upgrade up front. Then with the depth at corner in this draft we could get a pretty CB and S in rounds 2-4, and and OL depth and KR later.

Everything I've seen at the Senior Bowl confirms what I saw during the season - looks the part, but lacks that elite acceleration to get him round the edge against NFL LTs.

He's a small DT.

You put 20-25 pounds on that guy he is no longer an undersized DT.

He is 6'5 281 pounds. I think he can be a dominant DT if he adds some weight.

A lot of people are wondering why he didn't have as good a senior year as he did junior year. It is because he played DT his Junior year. And he was a beast even though he was undersized.

i don't see him as being someone who would want to put on weight to play DT or even wanting to play DT.

i can see him being someone who will complain or dig his heels in the ground and refuse to play DT.

Why?? He played DT all year in 2010. Why do you think he is would complain??

He has already added 30 pounds . Not sure where your information about him being a complainer and a locker room cancer is coming from but it isn't very accurate.

I can tell you don't have a high opinion of him personally but he has played 3rd/4th fiddle to Austin, Paige-Moss, and Quinn as a left DE rotational guy, then 2nd fiddle to Paige-Moss starting at DT where he dominated, and then gained the spotlight after losing his position coach and head coach to paly a very good year at right DE.

he has always played where needed in spite of a lot. He was rated 3 stars most off his prep and jumped to 4 late. DPM was a highly recruited long time 5 star stud and everything going on in chapel Hill had him playing behind a Sophomore (Martin) last year.

Ideally DPM would play the right and Coples back to the left but DPM lost his attitude and a younger Martin was more comfortable on the left.

His entire career he has been relegated to play where he was needed and not so much where he wanted to play or felt the most confident. Is that an excuse? Sure. Will he be asked to play something other than left DE if he becomes a Panther? Sure.

Can he play inside now? Can he gain a few pounds without losing a step? I think so.

The only thing we know for sure is that Coples is perceived as slacking off in the one season where he had all the attention. He won't take attention away from CJ or Hardy, and if he plays inside with them as bookends on passing downs I believe it will be seen as nothing but unfair to the rest of the league.

The main point is I don't see a CB, DT, or DE that I would take above him right now that I truly believe is an option. I hear Still and Brockers and they are good players. I just don't think they have the versatility, athleticism, and advantages that a cyborg like Cope does.

I'm looking forward to 3:30 to see how it goes today.

:cheers2:

He's a LDE that doesn't have an elite first step. That's know, but he's got speed, agility and plays the run as well as any one in this years draft at DE.

About him complaining on where he plays, he says in his senior bowl interview that he's special because he can play everything from the 0 to the the 9 tech. He's not going to complain if he's asked to move inside or to RDE or anything like that. The kid actually loves football.
