Coples at Senior Bowl

Why not CJ, Edwards, Coples, Hardy? of sub out Edwards for McClain, Neblett.

I honestly like where we are with our young DT's. The only one I'm not impressed with is Fua and we now have others who could play NT.

The Panther's would be pretty talented and young along the defensive line, Hardy, Coples, Johnson, McClain, Neblett, Kearse and maybe even Fua if he makes some major strides.

Good thing is that when the team goes to the 3-4 looks Coples can play the end effectively, Play DT or DE depending on the look and down and distance.

I lost this thread when it moved to the draft board so sorry so long to respond. Let me explain myself better.

Yes. Professional scouts are stupid. And the media in general is even more stupid than the professional scouts. *see Cameron Newton

I am going to let you guys in on a little secret of the draftnik world. When they say "scouts" say something they are referring to other draftniks that are comprised of mostly guys who just started a publication or website. They also are among the worst at jumping onto a narrative whether it is true or not.

For instance, "NFL scouts" thought that Cam Newton ran a simple offense that required only one read and/or that he wasn't patient in the pocket and didn't go through progressions. He just made one read and ran with the ball.

Gene Chizik, Gus Malzhan, Ron Rivera, and Marty Hurney will all tell you that people who said that were stupid. Who said that?? "NFL scouts."

So don't be fooled, these guys are not getting inside scouting reports from real NFL decision makers.

And for the record I never said I thought Coples was going to be a great DE or whether I thought the Panthers should draft him.

I actually think he would have more impact at DT. I don't think he is an elite pass rusher on the outside.

But if he does end up at DE I think he can be elite in run support. Just not in the pass rush where I envision him being just average.

Charlie Campbell's take on Coples after today's senior bowl practice..

Coples was dynamite. He beat tackles with a elite skill set, and was essentially unblockable. He started out by beating Tory tackle James Brown with a speed rush towards the interior of the pocket. Coples slapped and fought away Florida State offensive tackle Zebrie Sanders to win an edge rush. In the rematch, Coples grabbed a hold of Sanders and tossed him aside to run free to the quarterback marker. Coples beat Illinois tackle Jeff Allen twice, once with a nice speed rush and a swim move to cut to the inside. Another win came at the expense of UAB tackle Matt McCants. Coples showed a complete package with speed and power to go along with a repertoire of moves.

Don't know how good Coples will be as I didn't really pay attention to him a whole lot in college. However, if he does end up being the pick, then I will be fine with it since the one thing Rivera and Hurney have shown is that they are very thorough when evaluating their top pick. So, if we do take him, then I will feel confident that they evaluated all of these plays/games where Coples supposedly took plays off, and after talking with him (and everyone else involved) about the dropoff, came away satisfied.

After all, I'm sure they are quite able to recognize if he was being double teamed, the opponent designed plays to go away from him, or if he gave up on a play that he still had a chance to have an impact on. Not to mention talking with enough people to get a good understanding of his attitude and motivation. And since I don't see Rivera as the type to gamble on a possible problem child with his #1 pick (especially this early in his tenure as coach), I feel confident that if Coples does end up here, that we will have a very good player that is ready to do what he can to help this team.

Million dollar question. Say we draft Coples at 8/9th, and Brockers slips into the late teens-early twenties. Do you trade up to grab him or stand pat?

As much as I think Brockers is a beast,I would not trade up for him.I would wait to see if Worthy, or Cox drops to us.
