Amtrak

On the East Caost you won't get the double decker cars, (small tunnels) and the train stops at ever city along their route. But the train doesn't stop long, just long enough to unload and load. Engines are geared to 70 MPH, but probably won't do that because you are sharing the rails with freight engines. You will see sights that you are too busy to see when you're driving or you just can't see from your car.

It's kind of a shame that people don't dress up to take the train, or fly for that matter like they did up until the 70's. If you have the time, it's 100% better than flying.

I took a train from NC to south Florida and back.

It was cheap, took almost a full day. I took an iPod, drank alot of beer, and took a Valium (for "anxiety" ;) I would say it was a great time, but I kinda passed out a couple of hours in, and had to be shaken to wake up by the attendant.

Also, it is def worth it to upgrade to business class. It was only like $20 more. The difference was in our cart there were only 5-10 people there. In the coach class, there it was close to full. So it was nice to be able to sit anywhere, stretch out and relax.

I want to do it again sometime with my family, across country sounds really cool!

I have never been on Amtrak, but we might take it up to Boston and New York for a spring break vacation, just to be different. The prices are reasonable, and we will not be pressed for time, so it might be interesting. I have heard mixed reviews on Amtrak, but the business class cars might be well worth it. Might even get a sleeper car if we go to Boston.

I have taken the train in Europe, and it was definitely a mixed bag. Great in England, but in Italy, we had to stop for an hour at a goat crossing. :)

Only real train ride I've taken in the US was a short ride from Western Mass to NYC, but my sister who rode with me still talks about how much more fun it was than driving.

Been on many trains in Europe, it's the best way to get around because theres so many more trains and places with good infrastructure for them.

I have flown all my business life to various cities but NEVER on a train. I have some extra time before a conference and looked in to AMTRAK (Raleigh to Orlando). A bit over 12 hours one way. I think it may be neat to give this a try.

Anyone had much exp. with the rails? Any tips?

it takes longer but you have more space and you can get up and move around easier, I like trains but never rode one longer then 9-10 hours

The US really has lousy infrastructure compared to the rest of the world, I remember my time in Australia I never needed a car to do anything, with my bike and the trains you could go anywhere, may take a little longer, but you saved a lot of money by using the trains.

Yeah. Really lousy infrastructure.

To put things in perspective, the distance between Australia's two largest cities is less than 550 miles. The distance between the US's two largest cities is 2777 miles.

Illinois alone has 1/3rd the total mileage of Australia railroads.

In Europe, taking a train from country to country is something you should put on your bucket list. In America, it's something you should avoid like a plague.

If it weren't for lack of parking in major cities, I'd change that to "driving from country to country" in Europe.

    • Jonathan Mingo to the Cowboys Cowboys receive: WR Jonathan Mingo, 2025 seventh-round pick Panthers receive: 2025 fourth-round pick  Dallas Cowboys: C Leave it to Jerry Jones to wait until after Dak Prescott is injured to go after another receiver. To be fair, the Dallas Cowboys have a real need for the position. CeeDee Lamb is a superstar, but Jalen Tolbert and Brandin Cooks haven't been the needle movers that the Cowboys were hoping for. Making a trade for a receiver wasn't a bad move, but the player that the Cowboys gave up three rounds of value to acquire is questionable. Jonathan Mingo checked a lot of physical and athletic boxes as the 40th-overall pick in 2023. Unfortunately, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound wideout has struggled to be a productive receiver at the NFL level. Some of that has to do with playing for the Carolina Panthers, but Mingo has seriously lacked efficiency at the position. Mingo has yet to record his first NFL touchdown, catching 55 passes for 539 yards. Per TruMedia, he has just 0.74 yards per route run in his career, which ranks 177th out of 186 receivers with at least 50 targets since the start of the 2023 season.Even though Mingo fills a need, that's a lot of value to give up for a receiver that's struggled so much at the NFL level. The good news is that he still has a couple more years on his rookie deal, so at least the Cowboys are getting a cheap developmental project to learn from a star like Lamb. Carolina Panthers: A Instead of trying to hold onto Mingo, the Panthers took what they could get, and that turned out to be way more than expected. Mingo quickly became expendable thanks to the rapid ascension of rookie receiver Xavier Legette. Along with a larger-than-life personality, Legette has hauled in 26 catches for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns have come in the last four games, with Legette becoming more and more of a focal point in Carolina's offense. For a team that needs to capitalize as much as possible on draft assets, moving up three rounds in the draft to move on from a disappointing draft pick feels like an absolute win. https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-trade-deadline-2024-grading-every-move/
    • Keeping Johnson and losing him in the offseason and not getting anything in return is worse. At least we got a pick out of this. Even if we pick a long snapper in the 5th it contributes more to this team. And who says we are going to use the Ravens pick, this is just more ammo for Dan to package into a deal and maybe move up. He has shown that he's not afraid to wheel and deal in the draft.
    • He played at Alabama under one of the winningest coaches of the modern era. They beat the brakes off small schools because they're Alabama and Bryce could pretty much do whatever the hell he wanted behind that OL against that level of competition. But those games against Georgia and LSU stand out. That's how Bryce has looked in the NFL. Simply overmatched. That's why when you trade up to #1 for a QB you take the guy with the phsyical traits and the best arm. You play games and gamble on a point guard or the next Steph Curry and this is what you get.
