2011 Offense Rookie Review (Stats)

I was going to do a statistical analysis of the 2009 draft due to the "judge a draft after three year rule". Obviously with just three players remaining and none really making much impact at all, I didn't see the point.

These statistics (and more) are available in the premium section of profootballfocus.com. I have purposefully omitted certain statistics as it would be unfair to include them all. To explain why some stats seem to differ to elsewhere, PFF record all plays post game including those nullified by penalties.

So here it is:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cam Newton
Not going to dwell too long on Cam, everyone knows what kind of season he's had and you could probably count the number of "rookie" games he had on one hand. I will also only be detailing his passing information.
Passing Summary
Under Pressure
208 Dropbacks: 30 runs, 70/143 for 1078, 5 TD, 6 Int, 35 Sack
Not Blitzed
415 Dropbacks: 34 runs, 222/363 for 2650, 9 TD, 15 Int, 14 Sack
Kealoha Pilares
Our 5th round selection saw action in 10 games as a kick returner and 4 as a receiver, what will be remembered in his rookie year though, will be his franchise record 101 yard TD kick return. Despite this, the jury is still out on him as a kick returner.
Receiving
21 snaps - 4 receiving plays, 17 run plays
Receptions - Was never thrown in his direction
Kick Return
23 for 594 yards (25.8 avg), 1 TD
If you remove his 101 yard return, his average plummets to 22.4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Byron Bell

If would be safe to say that Byron struggled in his rookie year. As much as he has a feel good story and his work ethic and attitude is spot on, he may just lack the raw ability and physical tools to be a long term solution at RT. Amongst all OTs who played in over 50% of available snaps, Byron ranked 42nd of 58 for pass blocking efficiency, which examined the amount of times the player was responsible for giving up a hurry, hit or sack. Where he really struggled was with his discipline, giving up team high 12 penalties

Pass Blocking

487 Snaps

7 Sacks Given Up

7 Hits Given Up

24 Hurries Given Up

Run Blocking

342 Snaps

35 rushes for 140 yards and 2 TDs outside RT

33 rushes for 166 yards and 1 TD between the RG and RT

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 'Others'
Darvin Adams (WR), Lee Ziemba (OT) and Bryant Browning saw a combined 17 snaps between them and recorded no significant statistics.
first thing that comes to mind is that we have enough horses on offense that we
didn't need a lot of rookie help, except for Cam, of course.
Yup, I was surprised considering how bad the offense was the year before. However when you bring in two new TEs, an OG and a WR that all saw significant playing time, there really wasn't much left to go around for rookies.
Perhaps it showed that we had more defensive rookies drafted and playing significant time considering how much we struggled on defence.
