Why Not Draft a WR?

We're not going to find an upgrade over Gettis or Lafell in the 4th or later. The only WR I'd want from the first few rounds of this class is Blackmon. Everyone else will be drafted higher than we should be taking a WR (unless Jeffery falls to our 2nd round pick, I'd be down for him at that spot). People have talked about Joe Adams in the 4th, I'd be open for that.

i want criner, but i doubt we can get him in the 4th. adams would be a nice pick, but i like criner a lot more as a complete, 3 down wr. adams screams slot 3rd/4th wr/pr. not a bad thing but we have 2 of them on the roster. criner to me could be a dominant #2. his stock was much higher after 2010 than 2011. he and the entire zona team had a bad year. before that the guy was a stud (and was no slouch on a lackluster zona team mind you). i think he is again proving he is a very good wr with good tech and route running. his frame is exactly what you want these days too, big and strong to box out the reciever (he is good at going after the ball, not waiting for it to hit him in the chest).

if we had a 3rd i would take him there to make sure we got him (or broyles, depending on what you think of gettis/lefell long term). i think he is every bit lafell in college. he isnt going to be the fastest guy for sure, and wont be a guy thats dynamic in the open field but he will be a guy that moves the chains. some draftniks put him at a pedestrian (for a wr) 4.6+ 40. thats the knock so far. he will get a chance to show his athleticism (or lack of it) at the combine. he is showing an ability to get open and make sound catches. also known for making the circus catches and giving up his body for the ball.

as for adams, yeah he is possibly one of the best athletes ar wr this year, but i would take ryan broyles in a heartbeat over him, as adams isnt head and shoulders above the other "smaller" wrs. i like j. wright (the other arkansas wr) and patrick edwards right there with him. he is going to be electric when he gets the ball in his hands. he is mccluster at wr. he could be a great option for bubble screens and smoke routes. people love comparing him to smitty, deshaun jackson and the like. i see him an competitor to pilares for kr/pr duties and the slot wr you can move around to create mismatches. i just like criner as a every down wr better.

speaking of broyles, why is he not getting more love from the draftniks. guy balls and is a good returner with great body control and hands, just not not 6'+. if he were there at the top of 4, i take him, even if you draft a wr earlier. this guy, more than adams, is smitty. guy is the definition of slot wr right now. yeah he isnt the biggest but he gets how to be a wr. i wonder what a few years in the wieght room at the nfl level will do for the cant get off a jam nonsense. guy is perfect for the 3 wr set. smitty isnt gona be here forever and we could use a guy that atleast in the slot is perfect to get seperation and make plays after the catch. this is the guy. plus he can return kicks. if his one arrest as a freshmen is the only other knock on a guy that was a model citizen afterwards, he needs to be in a panther's uni. he and criner (after the top 3 wrs) are the ones i hope we really go after ( i would be thrilled with either).

of the big guys after round 2, i love criner the best.

mcnutt is a hard guy to judge. sometimes i love his play others, he is just ok. former qb (where have we heard that before) that was converted to wr, and has done very well there. good competitor too.

childs, the 3rd ark wr, was the best of the arky bunch in 2010 with a lot of nagging injuries this year. heck i like him a little more as adams as a wr, but i dont think he fits with us (gettis and lefell are equal or ahead of him all around). at this point but would definately take a flier on the kid in the 7th or UDFA if he mysteriously fell.

stephen hill will go a lot higher than the current projections show imo. cant fault the production and questions as the guy was in the dreaded triple option at gt. he is going to blow up at the combine imo. another ridiculous athlete to come from gt. he will undoubtedly have a lot to prove about running nfl route trees, running crisp routes, and having dependable hands. he is a willing blocker by force at gt though.

personally i want blackmon to fall to us and make selecting a wr aftwards trivial, or at most bpa by a wide margin. a guy like adams, benjamin, graham or a developement guy in hill would fit the bill late (6th 7th) were you take the chance on talent with a lot less risk after getting blackmon.

would i take blackmon in the 1st, hell yes, only kalil and mo claiborne (the only lock on defense in the top 10) would sway me otherwise from him. too bad he isnt there at 8 or 9.i cant see using a 2nd on a wr unless floyd or jeffery dropped. they are just too good to say no to in the 2nd. assuming no big FA moves (aka with the team we currently have), we have too many d holes to plug to take a wr that is not head and shoulders above a cb or dl early, or a lb or S mid rounds. unless we move back in the 1st i dont see us taking a wr in the 2nd. i dont see one of the big 4 (after blackmon) still there honestly other than sanu who i am not crazy about. we will get some help along the front lines with edwards and beason getting back, but the backend needs work, or you must get a pass rush to help the back 4 out. i really think we are a big time wr away from not just having a dominant offense, but one that will be dominant for a few years . we have solid #2 options on the team, and 2 possible slots. we still have smitty but no true successor to him (gettis could be very good or drew carter still folks way too early to call this one). the earliest i could see a wr is a 3rd. too bad we have no 3rd round pick......

You can never have too much talent at WR but we pretty much have a high powered offense as is and need the defense to elevate to that level before we try to add more guys on o. I think Rivera more than anyone is ready to build a defense and do what he's great at.

What a lot of people do not seem to realize is this: You do not have to address your glaring weaknesses with the first few picks in the draft. You can draft a player where there is no need but there is a huge contract you can cut. For example, if we cut Wharton and drafted DeCastro, we save $4 million per year in cap space. Take that $4 million and sign a veteran DT or LB. You just got younger without putting rookies in vital positions.

It is complex. So, don't think we have to draft Defense because our Defense sucked. We had 2 pro bowlers on IR and a veteran DT. We have a ton of youth on the DL. I am excited about Kearse and Fua, and McClain may come around. Three rookies. At DE, Hardy is in the year where most DEs step up or step out. Keiser is a keeper. Yet, people think these are our weak areas, so we want to throw more youth at the problem.

Draft players that help us balance the cap by replacing big salaries that are underproducing. Draft needs, but don't reach. Trade down and build depth.

DT or CB in the 1st

WR, Dwight Jones(UNC) in the 2nd

i say solidify d early..go DL in 1st (COPLES or STILL or BROCKERS).. then go CB in the second..maybe we acquire a 3rd rd pick outta somewhere..then u can look to address offense. But we also have FA and a long time before now and april

CJ is good but no way does he turn a game around like a Peppers or Pierre-Paul or a Von Miller.

Thank you!!!! We need to draft a guy that OCs have to gameplan for and I personally think Coples can be that guy! the kid has plenty of upside and could work for us like PEP did..back in the day...acura days
