Mac Attack 1/19/12:* Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera joined the guys today to discuss the season, Cam Newton, and what the off season plans could be.

Ron says he really had no idea if they will lose offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski. It all depends on the interview process and he does with that.* He says he will hate to lose him because they are building something special here and wants “Chud” around to experience all of it.

Mac asked Ron what the biggest area of need is in the off season.** He says you always want to add to the 0-line to avoid holes due to injury.* They are still in the process of finding out what the biggest need is right now.* They will know more when the SR Bowl is over as to what direction they may go in.

Ron does say that defense needs to be addressed and huge problem last year was injuries and the fact the coaching staff was still getting to know all the guys on the roster.* They lost a lot of time due to the lockout.

Have to admit I didn't like him leaning on injury so much in this interview, especially the part about Marty Hurney talking to him about how many snaps our starters missed. Yes, we had plenty of injuries, but our roster was not where it needed to be even if not a single player got injured. It just didn't leave me with confidence that they will be aggressive filling holes.

Anyone else find it odd that Rivera is not at the Shrine Game practices with Marty? Don't coaching staffs typically go as well as GM's?

Only problem with DLo as a scat back is his ineptness at catching the ball at full speed a la sproles. A scat back is no need at all IMO, especially when we don't have enough carries as it is for our three headed monster. I think RR was just indirectly praising sproles with that comment.

On one hand I agree with you but on the other, injuries played a huge part. I think we had capable backups (Conner, Gaither, Fua, etc) and then when starters got hurt these guys were put into a spot that they couldn't survive in. Connor did well then he went down bringing in 3rd string guys. Not good, and I don't expect any teams 3rd stringers to be starting material. With all that being said a full off-season and time in the weight room will help the young guys and the coaching staff will have a full year of getting players adjusted to the scheme.

Don't get me wrong; there is no doubt that injuries played a huge part in our season. I just don't want the GM and HC focused on that. Injuries occur every year so the focus has to go beyond the penciled in starters. Get the 53 best players possible and we will overcome injuries.

I guess I'm afraid they have a false sense of security. Marty saying "hey Ron, did you know we missed more snaps to injury last year than any other team" leads me to believe that Marty will be less aggressive filling holes than is prudent.

But it is easy to read too much into an offhand comment. It just struck me wrong and probably means nothing.

    • i felt good for those few games that bryce didn't look like the worst in the league. all that fell apart again sunday.  i'm borderline just bailing on it all. i've been hanging on by a thin thread for several years. i mean it's not even fun to watch any football right now.
