George Lucas: See if I give you Episodes 7-9!

I haven't read any of the books or followed the highly touted expanded universe besides a few video games but started reading some interesting discussions about the concepts of a light side sith or a dark side jedi in swtor(which is considered canon, just like everything else approved by lucas arts). When you get down to it the whole fantasy universe is a bunch of bullpoo. The Jedi are nothing but a bunch of elitist pricks that go around snatching up genetically superior children from their families and loved ones in order to indoctrinate them with some bullpoo moral code with the sole purpose of maintaining their power and influence over galactic politics. The Sith, while not really the 'good guys', at least are honest with themselves and those around them about what their goals and intentions are. The Jedi are the keepers of the peace, as long as they're in control.

Meh, that's a pretty simplistic view of it. I've read probably 90% of the SW books to date... a big part of what you described is just an issue with any fictional story, particularly one that has multiple authors and multiple interpretations of the story, although they are are generally approved by Lucas' group.

I will say this however, that the most interesting stories (by far) are the ones that detail the Sith. They are generally much more interesting characters (Darth Bane, Darth Vader, Darth Caedus) but that may just be the writing as much as anything...

Anakin was to bring balance to the force. Doesn't balance imply the midpoint or compromise between 2 opposing things? How does destroying the dark side influence achieve balance?

ANH could be described as the Jedi Order, having been decimated to all but one left, teaming up with criminals and resorting to terrorist tactics by making a suicide run to destroy a strategic weapons system.

It's all about perspective.

Yeah that whole prophecy garbage was something else Lucas didn't quite think out. Shock. But his excuse that time was that any existence of the Dark Side is an inherent imbalance or some something.

I've never really figured out what that whole "balance prophesy" was all about... I think it was just Lucas trying to throw something else in the story... doesn't really make any sense and really isn't ever mentioned in the books...

Only thing I can figure is that it's a reference to Vader killing Palpatine in ROTJ.

I always figured it was him killing Palpatine. It didn't balance anything, just left Luke as the only one left. I guess it could reference how Luke rebuilt the jedi though. From what I understand he wasn't nearly as dogmatic as the previous jedi order.

Light side Sith actually makes sense since any emotion technically makes you Sith. If you love someone or something, you're Sith. Going on that definition though, I don't get how a dark side Jedi is possible.

Correct... in the books Luke doesn't really have much to go on except what little Obiwan and Yoda taught him and a few tidbits here and there that they found. He pretty much makes up the Jedi Order as he goes... they don't prohibit marrying and attachment as much as the Jedi Order of the Republic did.

They've pretty much played out the Luke/Han/Leia stories... which is why recently there have been a lot of Old Republic books and books about other characters.

instead of answering questions, lucas just burned the original trilogy full of plot holes with the prequels

The prequels were all about selling action figures, so it did have something in common with the originals.

For the readers out there, you should check out K.W. Jeter's Bounty Hunter Wars - a trilogy based on Boba Fett's return after ROTJ. It's hard to get me to read full length novels, but I couldn't put these down as a teenager. Good stuff.
