George Lucas: See if I give you Episodes 7-9!

I really enjoyed episodes 2 and 3. But of course I am a Star Wars nerd, so my opinion doesnt count.

I think the prequels did a great job of telling the saga of Anakin's rise through the ranks, and his unexpected downfall due to being outsmarted by Palpatine, only to redeem himself at the very end. They also did a good job of revealing the political mechanisms that Palpatine orchastrated in order to come to power. Palpatine is actually my favorite character due to his relentless cunning and how he plotted everything from the beginning in the shadows.

I think that the #1 main reason that people hated the prequels, and is something that I agree with, is that Hayden Christianson (or however his name is spelled) was a TERRIBLE choice to play Anakin. He did such a bad job that it effectively ended his acting career.

Sure your opinion counts, but it's just wrong. :D

jk

One thing I will agree on, however, is that Palpatine is the best part of the prequels, not in the least due to Ian McDiarmid's absolute gleeful haminess. I don't know if I agree about his plotting to come to power, mainly because the whole reason everything worked out for him was because everyone else in the movie was a complete retard.

I also don't know how much was Hayden's fault and how much was Lucas'. Lucas has never really been an actor's director to begin with--the worst performances in the original trilogy, in my mind, was in ANH for that reason. I don't think they're as bad as some people like to joke, but certainly Hamil and Carrie Fisher and even Harrison Ford seemed a bit more constrained than they did in, say, Empire.

Basically, I think it's the issue that Ford and Hamil talk about at the beginning of this video (about the first minute or so):

Plus, there's the issue of the all encompassing greenscreen that plagued all three films, especially II and III. A lot of people may not realize this, but acting is hard, especially psychologically. And it is really, really hard for an actor to get in scene, in character, and "act" correctly when they have nothing, absolutely nothing to work off of. Which goes back to Lucas' misplaced priorities. I honestly believe he has a passion for groundbreaking special effects. He just doesn't have a passion for doing what a movie needs to work.

On a side note, Chris999, have you seen RedLetterMedia's reviews of the prequel films? You may not like them because they pretty effectively hammer the prequels to death, but they are fascinating in the points they make (I basically just ripped off two of them in this post).

What is amazing to me is that Lucas is more of a marketing genius than a writer or director combined. He revolutionized how film makers make money from their films by telling Fox, Yeah, keep the money, give me marketing rights. THAT is where his money came from.

You know he had a mental breakdown during the filming of ANH, which is why he didn't direct ESB or ROTJ. I was shocked when he decided to do the directing of the new trilogy... shocked and disappointed because I knew what was coming. He's a bad director, plain and simple. But a good writer in his time (years ago).

He should sit up in his private Jedi Temple on a throne of Hasbro toys and allow new ideas and new creative minds to take the franchise forward in the name of money alone... from his point of view. I remember there was talk of a live-action tv series several years ago that would have rejuvenated the franchise, but he stepped in and chose to fund that Clone Wars cartoon show instead. WTF, dude? Just let other people handle it and cash the checks.

The more you tighten your grip...

This is a great point... why not just sit back, let someone else run with the ideas... he could even require that he has some input... new movies would make tons of money if done correctly. The fan base is huge.

I've said it before... take one of the good novel writers, Timothy Zahn for instance, and make his book(s) into a Star Wars movie. Lucas would make a killing off of the licensing alone.

George Lucas congratulating the creators of Lost:

Congratulations on pulling off an amazing show. Don’t tell anyone … but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories — let’s call them homages — and you’ve got a series.
