applauding in a movie theater

Acceptable? Have you ever done it or been in a theater where it was done?

I was watching "White Men Can't Jump" at Eastland Mall in Charlotte (and yes I was one of the few honkys in the place). The place went CRAZY when Woody slammed that one through at the end of the movie-- I'm talking high fives and all sorts of hootin' and hollerin'.

That's really the only time I can think of a big time reaction like that in a movie.

I've seen it more in first weekend releases and midnight releases if you get a good crowned it makes the movie better, and I rather enjoy it.

best crowed reaction ever was when I was watching the 300, probably the best crowed you could ask for, cheered in all the right places, the whole theater cheered really loud when the Queen killed the traitor even heard a "you go girl" made the feel to the movie that much better.

another good crowed was when I watched the Dark Knight but nothing has come close the the 300 crowed for me.

Yea I remember people clapping after the pencil scene in The Dark Knight

It is pretty silly though since clapping is intended as a compliment to someone that can actually hear it.

I guess it would be appropriate in screenings where the cast/crew are present.

I used to think applauding a movie was dumb, but since then I've come around on it. I think the applauding has more to do with the camaraderie with the other movie goers--you know, it acknowledges the fact that everyone's liked what they've seen.

I mean, I used to think you should be absolutely dead silent during a movie, until I basically learned that we're one of the only countries that does that. Not being obnoxious, I mean, but cheering at big moments, and even yelling funny stuff when something crazy happens.

It's all about the atmosphere of the movie, really. When you have three hundred people laughing or cheering at something, IDK, there's a different sense in the theater. It's the same reason a joke you might chuckle at could become explosively funny when another two hundred people are laughing at it at the same time.
