Mike Martz retires

Former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz is retiring from coaching.

Martz contacted me Monday to confirm that he is ending his distinguished coaching career in order to focus on other opportunities.

Martz, a former head coach and long-time offensive coordinator, won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams as an offensive coordinator. He is famous for his innovative schemes and for orchestrating "The Greatest Show on Turf" offense while in St. Louis.

Martz spent the past two seasons running Chicago's offense -- reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2010. Martz turned down a contract extension earlier in 2011 and resigned from the Bears following the season, citing "philosophical differences."

In five years as the Rams' head coach, Martz compiled a 53-32 record.

last time he was unemployed teams weren't exactly chasing after him. i can't remember how long it was before he got a call for an interview.

i do remember some reporters talking to him about his job situation and lack of interest and he gave a "no comment".

his performance in chi-town didn't really do anything to show he's still got it either.

the dude made his offenses too complicated and now have become incredibly archaic.

he's retiring because he sees the writing on the wall.

no one wants him.

The guy was innovative, you have to give him credit for that. And his offensive system worked, as long as you had a new Pro Bowl QB to plug in every year, because his system killed QB's.

He would probably still get offers except he is known as being a bit of a d!ck.
