Given the choice next season, do you...

We should get a full body protective suit for Cam.

Seriously though, Cam will get hurt at some point or another. No way to avoid that. Focus on the D-line where the help is really needed.

I gotta disagree that there's no way to avoid that.

Drew Brees is smaller and less mobile than Cam Newton. How often do you see him on the injury report?

I think with a pick this high, top 10, it has got to be BPA regardless of O or D.

#8 pick needs to be an immediate impact player and no reaching.

It has to be a game changer, be it O or D.

Just how I see the draft anyways...Panthers have 5 other rounds, mercifully, but that #8 pick needs to be big time.

I'm always amazed at the Giants, if there is anything ole Ernie seems to always do right its DL and WRs....year in, year out.

I think we ought to give Otah one more year to show us he isn't injury prone. Let Shwartz take a shot at starting at RG but let Hangman stay as back up. Sign a vet to compete with Bell in case Otah goes down, and if that doesn't work out we're probably looking at taking an offensive linemen with our first pick in 2013.

As for the D-line, we get Edwards and the rookies back. We had a couple promising guys at the end of last year such as Shirley, Neblett, and Keiser. Along With CJ and Hardy getting better every year, we are about one player away from being decent on D-line. Thats why I have us taking Devon Still this year.

Coming back next season on the O-Line...

Geoff Schwartz

Jeff Otah (maybe; not liking the odds)

Garry Williams

Bryant Browning

Over on the defensive side...

Ron Edwards

Sione Fua (3rd round pick)

Terrell McClain (3rd round pick)

Jon Beason (LB)

Thomas Davis (maybe)

Thomas Williams

Don't know about anyone else, but I see more talent coming back on the defensive side of the ball. Now granted some might not consider Fua and McClain as 'talent' but they were third round picks.

I'm not convinced Schwartz is a starter. Worse, I'm not convinced either of the guys who, at least for the moment, are starters (Hangman and Bell) should be. I'd be more comfortable with all three as backups, and I have a feeling Otah is gone.

Guess I'm one of the few that wants to see the offensive side of the line addressed with as much urgency as the defense.

A few thoughts:

  • Schwartz graded out very well during his time at RG. Unless his hip injury lingers, he should be our starter.

  • Otah is iffy, but just as iffy (perhaps more) is Thomas Davis.

  • Fua should be improved, as there's not much room in the other direction, but there is no reason to believe that he will suddenly become very good.

  • Thomas Williams? Really?

In the last part of 2009, Schwartz looked decent. During that same period, Matt Moore graded out pretty well at quarterback too. The following year, neither looked like anything special.

Sadly, I'm not counting on Thomas Davis being back anymore than I am Otah (hence the "maybe").

Edwards and McClain are bigger deals to me than Fua, but all are unknowns.

And yes, Thomas Williams. And on the other side, Garry Williams and Bryant Browning. I actually left off one guy (Jason Phillips, LB) but probably shouldn't have for the sake of completeness.

That's what we got.

Schwartz was switched from RT to RG during the season after playing solely Rt the previous year.

So it's understandable that he struggled. After he settled down he was actually pretty good.

Good enough to be a full time starter with the same kind of impact as say, Carl Nicks with the Saints or Chris Snee with the Giants?

Love Schwartz, but still think he's better suited to be a backup.

the oline is fine or at least good enough to get by without doing much this year.

we had bell who was an udfa and newton survived and he'll only get better. the oline did a pretty good job of protecting him. don't let that 21st in pass protection make you think they didn't do a good job. that doesn't tell all the story. they were pretty well above average in giving him 3 seconds. when that happens that tells that they are doing their job.

cam's sacks came because he holds on to the ball and waits/looks for opportunities and scrambles. the sack rate is usually high with QBs who do that. also him being rookie made him more prone. i gave more info about it in that thread that talks about them being the 21st ranked team in pass blocking.

meanwhile, we have a very weak Dline. we can't stop the run. we can't get to the passer. we give the QB too much time and that makes everything harder for the D.

we have to get that fixed. that is priority #1.

FWIW Bell got worse as the year went on.

Buc's DE's flat abused him a few times, along with JJWatt (who abused everyone) and Heyward of the saints who was average at best.

Im still on the D-line trail, but would love to add some Mid-range FA to the Oline for depth and competition.

I liked Thomas Williams and Jason Philips at LBer.

FUA will get better and better, he needs str and conditioning serious like.
