My dog attacked me tonight

Has he been checked by a vet lately. He could have something going on other than just old age. Maybe feeling some pain related to arthritis or something. I'm sorry he bit you. I wish I could say something to make you feel better about it. :/

That could be it.

I was petting my big Collie one day. He growled at me and snapped. Then was all sorry that he did that. We took him to the Vet and turned out he had arthritis in his hip. My Mom gave him an aspirin a day in hamburger, and it helped him get around. (He lasted another year and a half before we finally had to put him down.) :cryin:

Ughhh that sucks man. My dog is starting to act weird, he's a 4 yr old black lab. Sometimes when he is laying down on his bed and we ask him to get up and he growls. Makes me nervous cause we got a 2 month old....

That might have something to do with it.

Dogs change when kids come around.

I would get him thoroughly checked out Dave.

Might be something wrong with him.

My four-year-old bulldog, Jumbo, still has his "ego nuts". Whenever he does something bad, and I call him out on it, he growls at me like he's a bad ass, haha. I'm all, "WHAT?!?!?! ARE YOU GROWLING AT ME?!?!?!?! fugIN' SIT!!". And he stops and does.

Now, my last dog was a Jack Russell. He was real old. Died of brain cancer. But he got very cranky in his old age before the end. He'd be sleeping and I'd accidently bump him with my foot, for example, and he'd jump up and bite my foot HARD. Then run off because he knew I was pissed. I miss that silly bastard. Cancer is evil. Took one of my cats too.

I've had pets since I was in first grade. Lost count a long time ago of how many times I've been bitten, scratched or something. I think probably only one dog and one hamster didn't bite me at some point, but in nearly all cases only once.

Not true of the birds, sadly. They still get bitey sometimes. They do a lot less damage than a dog could, but it can still hurt like a dickens if they catch you right.

Dimbee-

your dog is in pain- either arthritic or something else- get him to the vet asap and get him checked out and if needed some pain meds-

my dog cant take the usual dog pain meds because they make her sick, but when we tried Tramadol we found it worked for her and she tolerates it well. also the chodroitan glucosamine with msm helps arthritis

good luck

hate to be cold Dimbee, but if the dog is 13 today, what are the chances he is still around by the time you and the Mrs. to be have kids?

other than that, yes, bring him to the vet, something is pissing him off and it ain't you!

I gotta agree with everyone else, he's more than likely in some type of pain. At that age I bet it has something to do with the hips.....Just get him checked out as soon as you can..Don't know where you live or if you have a vet but if you are in Charlotte, Stonecrest Vetinary Clinic is great!

Thanks everyone, for your thoughts and ideas. My fiance works at an animal hospital, so he's well-checked and everything. He takes daily meds and vitamins (like Glucosamin Chondroitin) to aid with his aging. He has a fantastic diet and is well-loved and taken care of. He's acting totally normal today, so I'm not beating myself up over it anymore. Just chalking it up to him being old and cranky. If it becomes a trend, then I'll start worrying.

Again, thanks everyone.

I agree with the others, could be a pain issue. He is getting up there in age for his size....sounds like he has a great home with you and you have taken wonderful care of him. Any chance he may be having hearing problems? I have also heard of a dog getting a dementia type thing.

As you are doing, I would watch him...and if there are any other changes/anything unusual...get him checked out.

Hope all is ok.
