Hurney Would Have My Vote for GM of the Year

Hurney had the first overall pick, he could take anything on the shelf.

Our cap situation and our record do not match. Spending much, winning little.

If I remember correctly, most of those new contracts were smartly front loaded. I do think we overpaid, but that's how you keep players on a team, that at the time looked to be a dismal place to play for years to come.

Maybe not GM of the year, but certainly he had a strong year. I think the opinion on drafting Newton was about 60/40 against among Panthers fans, and about 80/20 against among others I talked to. Hurney could have made the "safe" and wrong decision to take Darius or Peterson and didn't. Anybody who spouted off last spring about how taking Newton was a mistake should refrain from any criticism of the GM now. The Olsen trade was a steal, obviously, and our starting offensive line is stacked with our own draft picks, with only Gross and Otah being first rounders; Kalil, Wharton, Shwartz, Hangartner and Byron Bell all late round finds. We have solid mid round draft picks on D in Johnson, Hardy, Anderson, Godfrey and Munnerlyn. We need a healthy Beason and starting quality CB and S, along with a year to adapt to Rivera's defense.

Signing Delhomme to final contract and then eating it.

Current contract with D Williams could be seen as negative especially if Stewart and D FA's cannot be signed.

Just what I said, our cap number is very high and so are the holes in our team. I never said he was a failure, just that he might not deserve the slobbering he was getting.

that's all?

okay.. well Delhomme lowered the cap and it's not your money, so it had little effect on you and a positive effect on the team. Delhomme was a direct result in trying to keep Pep one more year before Fox got canned.

DWill was high, and I think we could have let him walk... however, Hurney also should get high praise for front loading that contract to make signing Stew an irrelevant factor. As has been mentioned, we should be able to lower our cap through the same cap specialist who is getting criticized.

and you have to keep in mind, there isn't much slobbering going on.. majority of the time it's people who want to give too little credit that requires others to step it up and explain to you why he's been pretty good overall...

From 2001 forward...

1st Round Talent: Dan Morgan, Julius Peppers, Jordan Gross, Chris Gamble, Thomas Davis, Deangelo Williams, Jon Beason, Jonathan Stewart, Jeff Otah, Cam Newton

Early Rounds: Kris Jenkins (2), Steve Smith (3), Will Witherspoon (3), Travelle Wharton (3?), James Anderson (3), Ryan Kalil (2), Charles Johnson (3), Charles Godfrey (3), Dan Connor (3), Brandon Lafell (3)

Late Round Gems: Ricky Manning (4), Geoff Hangartner (5?), Tony Fiametta (4?), Greg Hardy (6) *still think he will be a huge success next year*, David Gettis (6)

Say what you want, but the man is on point with his 1st round picks, and finding talent and depth later. He had one really bad draft year...2009. I think his successes far exceed his mistakes.

Not to mention he is a cap king. You can count on my vote, if it were real.

This must be a joke.

Cam Newton is the only positive action that Hurney has made in years and that was not really his doing....Richardson fell in love with the guy during their interview....

Hurney is a sack of poo.

well said..

TRuth is that most GMs miss quite a bit. It is hard to predict the future and know how college players are going to translate to the pros. He relies on his coaches and scouts to guide him. Lately he has done a pretty good job in my estimation. GM of the year? Probably not, there are others that have done a better job. But his work has been solid and he is surely on the right path as are the Panthers.

mike brown hired a new, better OC, drafted a solid QB, drafted a franchise WR, signed some key defensive players, traded two players for a 1st, 2nd, and 5th round picks (i think), and made the playoffs after being the 4th pick. probably the first great off-season he's ever had.

trent baalke hired a new staff, drafted the best pass rushing rookie in a decade, signed some good guys on D, replaced everyone who left with someone just as good or better, and became the #2 seed after being the 6th pick.

The one good move Hurney did was draft Cam Newton. If he didn't do that, none of these other flimsy good moves would have mattered. And drafting Cam is exactly what I would have done. Therefore, Jerry Richardson could have hired me, SMF, as GM at the start of the season and there would be at least some people on the Huddle saying I should be GM of the Year.

well said..

Well said for someone who sounded like they just turned on their T.V. and watched their first football game this year. Not to mention not really written in a way that conveys intelligence.

Never understood the hate for Hurney on this board, but then again most people here have no idea what they are talking about so not like it really matters. Once one newbie goes Hurney sucks!!Armanti!!rwar!!!! its just a matter of more noobs hopping on the bandwagon.

I came across this thing called sarcasm. It's new to me and I was just trying it out for the 1st time. I'm not sure if I did it right, so any tips on how to effectively master it is welcome.
