Stew says he'd love to stay a panther long term

To the point about Cam's running ability. I would rather see Cam's carries go down not up over the course of his career.

We aren't at all in a "New England" "Pittsburg" situation where we can just "trade around for draft picks". We have a 1 year old offense and a 2nd year QB, and we just don't have that kind of depth and any position. After Stew the drop off would be huge. Would like to see this staff get at least one more full off-season before I'm confident in the "next man up" mentality. Point in case, if you have production right now you covet it.

A scat back is as risky a draft pick as there is.

The point about Stew being expensive to re-sign so trade him now. This actually complicates a trade, not the other way around. It seems to be a common misconception though.

I would be upset if we lost Stew. I 100% expect our young healthy 1st round draft pick to sign a long term contract extension. When you use NE and GB as examples of teams trading away players, those players aren't their first round picks from just a few drafts ago.

So u would rather lose Stewart after this season because we can not afford to pay two top RB's than to get a possible long term answer at another position maybe 2 through a trade for picks?

As far as the scat back situation goes I'm just repeating the thoughts and beliefs of our head coach his words not mine.

teams like NE don't let players like Stewart go.....they let players like Williams go.

Title to the thread should be reworded to say...

"JStew wants to stay a Panther long0term if the Panthers offer him a big contract".

It is not as easy as "whether the Panthers want to keep him".

There is a finite amount of money to be spent under the salary cap. Teams have to make hard decisions all the time about players they would like to keep. You have to weigh the cost-benefit of not only that player....the other players that could be signed with the cap space.

Sometimes you have to let good players go to make the team better overall.

They have, it's not if we think it's a good idea. The team does and has already banked on him being productive for at least 2 more seasons, maybe more.

.

No, they haven't. Carolina has not banked on a 30 yr old to be there ground attack. They have Stewart who is young and Newton. You can easily argue Newton/Stewart were the foundation of the ground attack w/ Williams being more of a complimentary piece.

NFL contracts are funny things......you can give a guy a nice long contract fully realizing the entire time they won't see the end of it.

Yes, but they can't really cut him and not be in cap hell because of it till 2014. I posted the numbers for what it would cost to cut or trade him before then. 17 million and 9.6 million the next two seasons. He isn't getting cut either of those. The year after that, it's still difficult as it would be a 6.4 million cap hit.

Basically in 2012 and 2013 it would cost the team more to cut him then to keep him. Would roughly only save the team around 3 million in 2014 if they cut him then with a cap hit of 6.4 million.

So there you have it.

Williams will be here for at least 3 more years. Now, make the argument that we need to sign Stewart to a big contract also and let them split time.

And while you are at it, name any other team in the NFL who has two 1st rounders (RB's) and resigns both of them to mega deals. Go ahead, we are waiting.

easy.

Stewart at 26 and 27 will be a signicantly better RB than Williams at 30 and 31. That is just speaking in general terms.

In this offense.....that is magnified.

There are no franchises that have drafted 2 1st round RBs in 3 years......most franchises realized it was a passing league prior to 2011.

You kinda have a haughty ass attitude when "trying" to make a point. I notice wherever you go, you have the need to disparage the poster before you make you wise words known.

Obviously, Stewarts contract is not up, if it were, we could not trade him.

Since we are not in good shape cap wise, why don't you enlighten all the idiots on this board with the bountiful dollars the Panthers will come upon to sign another part time RB who will make more than Williams. I know you have all the details and you are just wanting us to beg it out of you. A man with your wisdom has us all just waiting.

When you are finished, you might want to send your Capology notes to Hurney. Funny, but he seems to go by the league rules. Let us all know how we can sign extra defensive players and all the part time RB's we want.

And don't forget to call us names before you enlighten us.

attitude? Lol

Name calling? I haven't done neither in my posts with you.

"Love that thinking" that is an opinion of mine...if you consider that degrading, and name calling, you really should just stop posting.

Thank you for taking time in attempt of labeling me. Even if what if i did what you accuse me of, i wouldn't care. Here is a small hint...be who you are, and don't apologize if people don't like you. Get over it. I don't need your approval, and you certainly don't need mine in a simple conversation.

trading away a playmaker isn't going to improve the team.

In fact, you are putting even more pressure on the defense.

While we all want and will get an improved defense, ya don't trade away a core player/play maker.

Hurney is muc better at handling the contracts than majority will give him credit for. That doesn't make them idiots, like you insinunated.

another misinformed fan.

Do you actually follow this team, or just pretend?

Not just me, I am saying when you address anyone, you come off as an ass. I understand the be what you are deal.

You go from acting like you have knowledge of our cap and all the players we can sign and then come back with the lame "Hurney knows what he is doing" Do we have tons of money or what?

I think we banked on it last year when we gave him the big deal
nice view point.

Fact is, richardson has always made sure that the good players, core players get rewarded.

If it wasn't for the new CBA being an issue for several seasons, williams would have been extended years ago. Instead, the panthers clean out the finances, wait for the new CBA to lock up their guys for the future...and you see it as they were overpaying an older running back.

Guess you don't believe in rewarding your players. So you'll never get the viewpoint that matters to the team.

On subjects of contracts, it is best to seperate yourself of your fandum viewpoint.

Learned that long time ago.

    • BPA! If that happens to be D-line, sobeit. FA has to figure in somewhere as well.
    • Chinn’s current stats are in line with his stats with Panthers before Evero arrived, and yes he regressed from his rookie year where he looked like a game changer. He is not putting up drastically different numbers now he just looks better on a winning team. We were all disappointed with his development even prior to Evero but he was definitely a misfit in the 3-4 defense.
