A thought on building a title team

Recommended Posts

To everyone saying that "the new NFL defense is offense" and thinking we need to try to become a shootout-style team, I say HELL NO.

The Lions lost tonight because their defense could not come up with stops when they mattered. If they had a grand total of three of those stops and kept the backbreaking plays to a minimum they win this game easily.

We need to augment the offense, yes, but defense needs to be our primary focus for at least the next two offseasons.

GREAT post; this is what I'm saying.

And the great part about it is we have the foundation of a juggernaut offense already.

when you watch the playoff teams this year, they have one thing in common: they get quick pressure. that's how you stop elite quarterbacks. you don't give them time.

all the good DB's in the world don't mean a thing if your front four is a collection of nick haydens.

Pittsburgh has been getting to Superbowls with second rate talent at corner; your point seems to be a good one.

get these players.

draft- 1st martin or riley(LT), then dontario poe, then vontaze burfict and sean spence

free agents- laron landry, brent grimes, cliff avril and pierre garcon.

guarantee you win a superbowl if cam keeps progressing and the defense gels together!!!!!!

Don't wish too hard...Hurney might give up the farm for a second 1st rounder :/

We take a corner high in the first and then trade next years first to get back in the late first round and grab a D linemen (pass rusher) that fell and manage a way to keep the 2nd rounder to address another need or vice versa. I could see it happening. If we think this team is good as we hope its gonna be, that next year pick will be a late first anyway. Hurney could get greedy.

Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it.

No, no, no.

I wonder, though, if the current rules favoring offensive production make it impossible to have a truly gritty defense anymore. You can have all the maulers you want, but if they're handcuffed by a rule book that makes QBs and WRs untouchable, they still won't be able to stop a high powered offense. I am beginning to think the best we can hope for in this era is to hopefully slow the other guys' offense down enough to eek out a win, rather than to have a defense capable of dominating against good offenses.

Apparently JR doesn't want to go after F/A.... :willy_nilly:

I think we are taking this out of context.Building your team through the draft does not prevent you from picking up free agents however I dont see them taking on expensive FA's contracts.Too much need and not enough money.

Defensive Tackles rarely excel in their first year. They usually need some combination of time in an NFL strength program, improved technique, and disciplined play in general. We started two rookies in 2011. I doubt that they earned the starts because they were awful in practice, there's obviously talent there. But in the games they just didn't get it done consistently. Next season, both of them should show a lot of improvement. And next season Ron Edwards should be fully recovered, providing solid veteran leadership on the interior. So that's not a position we necessarily need to fill in the draft, and Rivera has also indicated that he doesn't think it's a need.

The secondary, however, is obviously a need. And it's also an area where first year players often do well. If we can get a stud at CB, either through FA and the draft, and if our Linebackers come back from injury, and most of all if we stay healthy, we should have a very solid unit on that side of the ball. Maybe not Ravens/Steelers solid, but certainly middle of the league solid. And with a top tier offense, that should be more than good enough to contend.
