A thought on building a title team

While watching the Saints/Lions game tonight, these are some of the finest offenses I've ever seen. I've seen them both a lot this season. Stafford is absolutely unreal, Brees just the same. They have weapons all over the board. But this is no way to win a title. As it stands neither of these teams are going to be able to do it.

It might be fun to watch, but it's pinball offense. You have to be able to win that type of game if it's out there; but at the same time, you need to be able to slug it out.... make big stops... not give up 600 yards of offense or 400 through the air like the Saints did tonight even in winning. Their defense just gives up too many chunks to get to the top--we'll see in time if I'm right.

Think about the greatest show on turf Rams of 1999. They were a great offense. Could outscore you. But if they had to, they could strap it on and beat your asses in a slugfest--as evidenced by that Superbowl they won that year AND the NFC Championship game against the Bucs to get there. They were a complete team that could beat you at your style of game.

That said, we have a Cadillac offense. But it's not entirely predicated on the pass. We can beat you between the tackles, and I think in time Cam is going to be involved in and win shootouts in the new NFL that sometimes calls for that.

The only thing we're missing is the defense to be able to slug it out. Neither New Orleans or Detroit has that. People will point to Green Bay last year--they're an exception to the rule.

I want to build a sledgehammer defense--starting with this draft and free agency. If we have that, we're going to have almost a complete puzzle team that can beat you in any type of game you want to play.

This Saints team; they advance tonight. But lets be honest.. One possession if they need a stop to close out a game, they would come up short....

I keep thinking about guys like Devon Still from Penn State and Dre Kirkpatrick; God I wish we had two 1st round picks! We could play catch-up in the talent gap so quickly....

The new NFL is score, score, score, score...the packers won last year with that mentality. The defense does not need to be a top ranked shutdown unit, but must be able to force turnovers, like the Saints did tonight.

But the important thing right now is that the offense and Cam keep developing, thats the only way we can compete with our division.

The Packers D was pretty good last year. Plus their running game(Starks) appeared from nowhere last year, which was a big reason why they won.

I agree with you 100% Their defense is too weak to win the SB...

Our defense is a couple of players from being good enough to make the playoffs... & once you are in you have a chance.(unless you are Denver)

To everyone saying that "the new NFL defense is offense" and thinking we need to try to become a shootout-style team, I say HELL NO.

The Lions lost tonight because their defense could not come up with stops when they mattered. If they had a grand total of three of those stops and kept the backbreaking plays to a minimum they win this game easily.

We need to augment the offense, yes, but defense needs to be our primary focus for at least the next two offseasons.

My main point of this is I want to have a team that can close you out and win a 10-6 game or a team that doesn't mind shooting you out 35-31. And I have a feeling we are heading in that direction I really do.

Drafting justin blackmon yea it's scary to think we could score 40 a lot of games but when it comes right down to it, then we're the 2011 Lions really... score 40 and lose

      100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
