1st round Mock with explanations and extreme genius

MHS831

Recommended Posts

January 6 Mock Draft--1 round with trades and insightful as hell comments. I will add rounds as I find time and enlighten my following gradually.

1. Indianapolis Andrew Luck QB Don’t tell me that they are getting rid of Polian and Peyton in the same year—dynasty over, Luck era in Indy begins.

2. St Louis Matt Kalil LOT Bradford needs the stud LT to reach the next level. Rams wanted Kalil more than Blackmon.

3. Seattle (f Minn) Robert Griffin III QB Hawks swap first rounders, add 2nd and 4th; 1st in 2013. Washington not jilted—Shanahan wanted Flynn or Manning

4. Cleveland Trent Richardson RB Hillis could stay, but Richardson gives them variety in the backfield not unlike the 72 Dolphins with Csonka and Morris.

5. Dallas (fr Tampa) Morris Claiborne CB TB needed him to, but with so many needs, they swap first rounders with Dallas for an additional 2nd and 3rd round pick.

6. Washington Dre Kirkpatrick CB Washington really wanted Claiborne, but will take the bigger, CB. Shanahan gets veteran QB, to get WR later.

7. Jacksonville Justin Blackmon WR Jacksonville is patient and the player they coveted the most drops to them just in time to move to LA.

8. Miami Luke Keuchley, LB Too soon for a RT and Matt Moore won the QB job, so go Defense and start in the middle. Good fish.

9. Carolina Riley Reiff, OT Panthers make one pick, do many things. Protect Cam, upgrade LOT, ROT, and LG, and get the rare LT they will need.

10. Buffalo Jonathan Martin, OT Bills consider trade with Arizona, but decide they need the last starting-caliber LT on the board.

11.Minnesota (fr. Seattle) Michael Floyd, WR The gamble to drop and still get a LT failed, but Floyd is a solid player who will make Ponder better.

12. Kansas City Mike Adams, RT Not a good place for KC, who need a RT, but maybe not this early. Could go with a LB, but Adams fits them well.

13. Arizona David DeCastro, G Arizona could use help at OT, OG, and OC. Not to mention CB and another position or two. Best Player, just a boring pick.

14. Tampa Bay (fr.Dallas) Alphonzo Dennard, CB Tampa finally gets a pick. Since one CB is going to retire and the other to jail, they go ahead and grab a CB.

15. Philadelphia Zach Brown, OLB Philly, like everyone else, could use a T, but did not see value here. Instead, they have multiple needs at LB.

16. New York Jets Ryan Tannehill, QB Rex gets no ring with Sanchez under center. Tannehill is not popular now, but after the combine, his stock will soar.

17.Tennessee (from Cin,/ Oakland) Quinton Coples, DE The Titans were shocked to see Coples fall this far, but they knew they would have to trade over the Bears.

18. San Diego Don’ta Hightower ILB Perhaps their biggest need, the new DC will appreciate a player of this caliber.

19. Chicago Alshon Jeffrey, WR The Bears get a solid player and good value here, filling a huge need.

20. Cincinnati (from Tenn) Janoris Jenkins, CB Cincinnati could look to add a RB in the second round, but this is a good value for the Bengals and their biggest need.

21. Denver Devin Still, DT Fox has needs at WR and QB, but he could not pass up the highest rated DT in the draft falling to him.

22. Cincinnati Mark Barron, SS The Bengals make two moves in the first round that strengthen their weak secondary vs. Ben, Flacco.

23. New York Giants Brandon Thompson DT Since Vontaze Burflict is a psycho, the Giants take a solid DT from Clemson, some say the best 4-3 DT in the draft.

24. Houston Kendall Wright, WR Houston needs some weapons and since there were no NTs worthy of the 24th pick, Kendall keeps his show in Texas.

25. Cleveland (from Atlanta) Levy Adcock, RT The Browns reach a bit, but you have to respect the intent. A RG and a big RT to run behind. Take it off Colt’s shoulders.

26. Detroit Kelechi Osemele OG The Lions know that protecting Stafford is crucial if they want their WRs to eat. Not a glamorous pick but a solid one.

27. Baltimore Vontaze Burflict ILB Let the psycho learn from the master. A year under Lewis, and Buflict is a new LB—a stud LB.

28. Pittsburgh Alameda Ta’amu DT NT—a key position for the Steelers. Ta’amu has more versatility than the other, perhaps higher rated NTs.

29. New England (from New Orleans) Jared Crick, DE Crick has shown he can play several positions, and he is consistent.

30. San Francisco Chase Minnefield, CB San Francisco goes after a solid CB at a need position. He will never star, but he can be solid.

31. New England Courtney Upshaw, OLB Basically, the Pats get a stud by taking the BPA. I do not think he will fall this far, but in this mock, that is how it unfolded.

32. Green Bay Whitney Mercilus DE/OLB Green Bay gets a mid rounder fall into their laps to round out the first.

Sorry this is Bull. No way we take an OT with that pick. Defense, Defense, Defense my friend. Although if Blackmon is available then id jump on him. Hurney will give Otah another chance whether we like it or not. Hes real good when healthy, and the FO thinks he will be next season.

You have to see the big picture. I shall paint it for you.

Here is how drafting OT helps the defense. Draft Reiff. put him at RT with the plan to switch him with Gross in a year or so. Move Otah to RG--easier on the knees, with Bell behind him. Since you are counting on Otah, maybe he doubles his average over the past 2 years and plays 4 games. I feel good about Bell at RG as well. Bell can also play behind LG, where Schwartz and Hangartner are competing. Wharton? He is making $8 million in 2012. Not worth it. Release him. We would have a cap savings of up to $6 million. What could we do with $6 million? Defense Defense Defense. We could sign a solid DT or an OLB and Safety. You see, friend, we upgrade the defense and the offense by drafting OL and getting rid of the only inflated contract at a position where we can replace the talent. Wharton is 31, so his best days are behind him. He still is a great run blocker, but not worth $8 million.

We actually upgrade 3 spots on the OL (RT, RG, and reserve LT--LG in passing situations. Wharton was the 24th ranked LG in the NFL.

We protect Cam Newton. Did you like Cameron Jordan, who had 1 sack all year, teeing off on Cam in the last game? He is not really superman, and our defense cannot protect him. A LT can.

We get our LT of the future. Unless you plan to draft in the top 10 next year, you are not getting a solid LT if you do not do it now. Look over team needs --everybody it seems needs OTs. LTs are as valuable and hard to find as QBs.

So, you are wrong. There is a way we do it, and I just showed you how, why, and gave you multiple reasons. It is lonely outside the box.

We could shore up the line with this pick, because right now Reiff and Martin are the best picks at that position. Everything changes during the combine of course.

At least the OP put some thought into the whole draft. I found it entertaining.

Thanks buddy. -It is all in fun-- It is all based on drafting the future LT (Hard as hell to get a good one) and releasing Wharton and his big contract to pay for a defensive veteran or 2. Our D needs no more rookies--we need a veteran or 2.

I don't know if Otah can be a Guard. He's giant. Guards need to be mobile, especially in a read-option offense, and I don't know if a guy as large as Otah, and who has had knee troubles, can play guard in an offense like that.

I still like the Reiff/Martin pick, though.

Would love for Washington to sign Flynn and skip on RG3. Draft Blackmon in the 1st, TE Allen in the 2nd. Cooley is done.

I see your point-- I wanted Green last year (thought Cam would bust--bad thinking). Smith seemed to have hit a wall and was done. This year, even though he is 2 years older, I feel we have a year left in him. I think Lafell is ready to be the other starter and Gettis could give us three good ones. Pilares may get some looks.

I guess I am saying we have to let our youth develop before replacing them. I do not think Lafell and gettis wiill ever be a #1 WR, and Smith has to run out of gas sometime. I think LT is the practical thing to do, but Blackmon would sure be exciting.

To be honest, I think we have to progress as if Otah is done. I read an article that said his knees are shot, and a 330 pounder on bad knees is trouble. I am glad we found Bell, and I think he is a vincent-type RG. You are right, however.

I never thought about the option. Good thinking. It makes me think that we could --longshot--trade down and pick up a David DeCastro.

Aside from the top 3 picks, probably Luck, Griffin III and Kalil, here is my board for the first round (remember we pick 5-6 picks later):

Claiborne CB (with Gamble getting old and everyone else unproven, this would be sweet)

Reiff, OT (Take a LT when you can if you have a need. So many teams need LTs)

Blackmon, WR (I do not think we will draft a WR this early this year)

Martin OT (See comments above -Reiff)

Kirkpatrick CB (Seems to fit what Rivera likes--could be a bust turned safety--just sayin_)

Zach Brown OLB (based on need. Not a top 10 player)

    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.

    • Heels let another team go up 20 on them but this time they complete the comeback. HD never seems to have his team ready but he makes great halftime adjustments. Powell played the majority of the second half and his defense was the difference along with his big three pointer to give the Heels the lead for good. Trimble and Davis were also spectacular. Carolina can’t let Auburn get out to a 20 point lead though, they won’t be able to come back from that.
