Q&A with Jerry Richardson

Martin (responsible for 3 TDs) got abused all day, as well as our LBers... By that logic, Gamble isn't a good corner either. Hogan has played very well anytime I've seen him at #2..

I'm confident he'll be starting next year and will play well for us...

Gamble has a history, we have seen a lot of games with him. You have probably seen more of Hogan than me so you would be a better judge. I'm not saying he sucks or he won't be given a shot, I just don't think right now we should count on him starting based on such a small sample size. Just look at last year, so many people wanted Captain to start based on the games he played when Gamble was out and we see how that turned out.

I am sure that he is going to do everything he can to fix the defense this season though. That is one of the reasons he hired Rivera to begin with.

Jerry has always had a strong preference for head coaches with defensive backgrounds.

Does anyone remember him ever talking about that? Why is it, philosophically, that he believes in a defensive head coach?

JR said it plain and simple, if you score 35 points and lose people feel better than scoring 7 points and losing. Obviously wins are most important but how much better did most people feel when we lost this year versus last year? He is obviously in the business of filling seats and selling tickets.

There is some truth in that but it was also a clever way to disguise our defensive woes.

Leaving the safety discussion for a moment...

Anyone else noticed that Richardson has talked more this year about putting an exciting offense on the field than he has about wins? I don't know that this is significant as I know that coaches are ultimately graded on W's, but it is a change for JR.

So as long as JR is around, expect a strong emphasis on offense.

I think part of it is that it is a big sigh of relief hitting a home run with Cam.Can you imagine if things would not have worked out with Cam? We would still have our offense from last year and our defense from this year.

you're right, no one can predict if he'll turn into a solid CB.. like I said though, based on what I've seen, he'll be starting.

a few reasons: we probly won't bring in a FA CB and Hogan has a little more experience than a rookie. I think it's his to lose should it play out this way.

"our fans want points"

"it's a shorter drive when we lose but still have points compared to losing and only have 7 or 10 points"

What...the...fug.

JR it's not that complicated. What your fans want is a winning team, I could give a poo if we win with 10 points. Also, losing either way is just as bad and losing but still having points does not make it better. THe fans also want an owner that respects their PSL and other investment money they pay for the Panthers to even exist, that respect comes from always doing what you can to win and showing that you are dedicated by never letting up, this would have included bypassing the whole "plan for a lockout that never happened shebang".

Unfortunatley you have failed as of now. You have failed to win, you have failed to be looked at by the public as dedicated to winning. Signing your core is not good enough. I like JR and how he does some things but his time is coming to an end and I won't remember him as the owner he probably wants to remembered by. I don't remember him as a part of the team or organization, I remember him as a buisness man who has proven he will put the NFL before the team and fans.

I agree.

Basically said we won't consider signing elite free agents. That's one part of the puzzle. Why never consider it.

JR loves Armani Edwards for the marketing opportunities to the App State fan base. This interview reinforces thoughts I had after the draft. JR is more about marketing his business than he is about winning.

I think he actually somewhat responded to a letter i wrote!!

Last summer when the fad was sending in letters, I sent in a letter about how I thought he was doing an outstanding job. I told him that for a young franchise, the Panthers have already accomplished so much.

I told him the only downside was that I had to drive all the way from Wilmington to watch the team score 7 points and that was not fun for me or my son.

JR is influenced by Rooney in everything he does.
