Adjustments

If your getting killed by a certain set, you adjust your defensive play calling. If you see a defense that a play will exploit, you try it. Other than that, there is very little "adjustments" that goes on during halftime. The coaches are looking at photos and the players are getting re-taped. That's all.

It's a mental collapse and fatigue that killed the Panthers in the second half.

Just an FYI, the "halftime adjustments" thing is a myth. It's not like they have an hour to sit in the locker room and draw up battle plans. Adapting to the other team is done in the moment.

I think it's pretty clear that as the game wore on, the bad matchups on defense were exposed and teams were more capable of taking advantage of them.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera praised offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski for some terrific halftime adjustments Sunday that led to three touchdown drives to start the second half.

^the myth is that adjustments only happen between each half.. when in fact, there isn't that much time to get in-depth via game film and the team as a whole are constantly making adjustments throughout the game.

when the opposing team sees what you are doing in the 1st half, our team should have a good idea already on how they want to change up their game plan for the 2nd.. I don't see that as being anything ground breaking like people tend to view it as...

I don't think it's an either/or.. I do think people put too much emphasis on what "halftime adjustments" really mean (as stated above)..

i can't remember where i saw the quote, but i remember seeing a couple players remark how halftime was different with rivera than with fox because they were making adjustments. they said something about how they even pull out the board and draw up plays and such rather than just sitting around like they did with fox.

Adjustments occur throughout the game, however significant changes can be made at half time.

It's unbelievably easier to speak to a specific group, or unit of the team to go through some of the play calling changes when there isnt a football game and 10's of thousands of people shouting mere feet away.

Halftime is the time to make big adjustments.

Shouldn't you anticipate some adjustments from the other team and have a plan?

Yeah, I didn't want to put that part in my post because the lead in would've required more exposition than I wanted to type at that time, but I thought about it, so you fool yourself if you think you're supposed to be educating me.

Wouldn't think of trying.

I really don't think lack of adjustments was a big part of our second half woes. I agree with those who think it was more mental than X and Os. How many times did we as fans see the lead start to dwindle and say here we go again. Players aren't immune to that either. Newton actually was a part of the problem particularly in the first half of the year. It wasn't anything he did wrong most of the time but he hasn't really learned to finish and make big plays when the pressure is on in the fourth quarter. Unlike college where he could do it as well as anyone, he really suffered from a lack of confidence in crunch time. He tried to do too much and didn't inspire his teammates. He also didn't believe that the defense would do their job. The chemistry between the offense and the defense was poor early on. The last six or seven games were different from early on and the results showed. Obviously the poor defense was a huge issue justifying some of the concerns by the offense and Newton. Still a team needs to work together to win with both sides picking up the slack for the other. It didn't seem that evident this year as it has in some years past.

I agree, Rivera even commented on players needing to quit having the "here we go again" mindset b/c of one play/series to start the 2nd half.

Last game of the season as a perfect example.....just like the fans, you know as soon as Brees hit that TD pass to end the 1st half the players just had that gut feeling it was over. I mean if the D can't stop that......that is a hard for a team to think they can stay in a game for 4 quarters with that caliber of opponent.

I definitely think the mental aspect became a huge reason for 2nd half lapses as the season progressed. That's why the Texans game, for example, was so huge for us. We beat a playoff team on the road and played 4 quarters to finish off the win. So many games just went horribly wrong though as we all know. Falcons and Lions games should have been easy W's for us. That's part of having a young team and young coaching staff though. We've shown that we have the talent and ability to beat any team in the league, but we consistently have to play at a high level. I think that comes next year.
