What if we traded up?

after Claiborne, blackmon (who we don't need), kallil (if we give up on the extremely cheap extremely talented otah), RG3 (who we don't need), andrew Luck (who we don't need), there are no sure things, in fact besides offensive line players there may only be reach players available. Since Cinncy probably won't trade with us and after claiborne the draft is filled with a bunch of brandon hogans at cb. We are basically drafting for depth at positions that we are assuming will get injured again. Why not assume cam newton will get injured this year and draft a QB? I see no value in our 1st and 2nd round picks if they end up with OL and or linebacker/CB. If we can't trade down I'm putting all my eggs in the Claiborne basket ( meaning trade up and grab the sure thing), restructure contracts and sign free agents for DEPTH. Otherwise I foresee us screwing up our LAST top 10 pick for some time! Don't screw it up for depth!

THe last time we tried to trade up, we offered the Rams our first rounder in 2011 (Cam) for the 33rd pick in the 2010 draft so we could grab a QB named Jimmy Clausen. The Rams had a player in mind and did not deal. Whew.

No, we never offered our first to move up for Clausen. While we did offer our 2nd in a package to move up, it was the Rams that asked for our #1 to make the trade, but we turned it down. This all came out after the draft, but many just heard we tried to trade up and assumed we offered our first without getting the facts first.

Since neither of us actually know the facts, I am basing my statement on the conversation with Marty on WFNZ the day after the draft. I do not remember details, but at least I targeted a reference point. Not doubting you because, like I said, neither of us knew. If you have a source, please share. I do not know how any of us knows for certain what was offered. It has to be circumstantial.

We can say this:

1. The year before we traded our 2010 first rounder for a mid second round pick, Everette Brown and a fourth. We took Brown lower than pick #33--somewhere around #43. Why would we trade a first rounder one year for a smallish DE and not trade the first rounder the following year for the 33rd overall pick and a QB?

2. The same pattern was followed with Edwards. A second for a third.

3. Marty bragged about trading future picks saying, "We get next year's draft pick on the roster this year." That was his philosphy since the Otah trade, then the Brown.

4. He did not deny it on the radio program after the Clausen pick when the personalities were asking him about the offer. I think he said something like, "The Rams had the player they wanted and we couldn't convince them.

The rumor I heard was they were not worried about 2011 because Fox was already a lame duck and Marty was fighting for his professional life. They did not offer the 2011 second rounder because they wanted Golden Tate. When they could not mortage the future to get both and Clausen fell to them, they had to choose between Tate and Clausen. Fox wanted Tate, Hurney took Clausen and that ended their communication throughout the draft. We will never know what really happened, however. I am smart enough not to say another person's account is wrong when I know I don't know the facts either. I am interested in various perspectives, however.

I'll stop you right there. Yes, I do know the facts, Hurney said it in interviews following the draft. Basically, we were willing to give up our 2nd and some change, but not our first. As for sources, not really worth the bother anymore since it's actually been pointed out many times by different posters on this site when others have claimed we offered our first, yet the myth just won't go away. Whether or not you choose to believe it is really no skin off my nose. But it is what happened.
